The Java Development Kit is free for download from http://java.sun.com .
That and a text file editor are all you need to get started. There's even
a free tutorial there, but I can't remember the exact URL for it.

There's also an extensive listing of Java applications and applets that
have already been made at http://www.gamelan.com . You may be able to find
what you're looking for there and not have to learn a whole new language
in the process.
