Smokin,

Not only will we need to know the operating system and compiler you're using,
but since C and C++ don't come with much in the way of serial port or modem
controls, we'll also need to know which communications package you're using. 
I use Greenleaf CommLib and Com++ myself, for 16-bit DOS and 16- and 32-bit
Windows development, and Greenleaf also makes versions of these libraries for
several flavors of Unix.  See http://www.gleaf.com.

There are many such packages out there; however, I don't know of anyone who's
written one from the ground up and then started giving it away for free.
