Many years ago when I learned C++ (in the days before the universal use of 
PCs) the only C++ compiler I had access to (commerical or otherwise) was G++ 
(The same compiler in DJGPP). Since I was using VMS there were a lot of 
problems getting it to run and I had to do a lot of tweaking. However, it was 
there and I was getting it for free.

Even in those dark days I never thought to trash G++ or dismiss it as crap.
