sorry, i don't post to newsgroups all that often so i'm not familiar with all the courtesies i'm supposed to go through when posting :) i also wasn't aware of the explicit cast being required only in c++, so thanks for that knowledge anyway. i'd also just like to point out that the question wasn't mine, i was trying to help a guy out. anyway...later chris
