KT7A-RAID lock ups and crackling with SB Live Value

A couple weeks ago at a LAN party my friend and I made a trade of hardware.
I got his KT7A-RAID and he would take my KT7-RAID and I'd give him one of my
old Super 7 motherboards. This trade has been nothing but trouble for me.
From the second I installed this new motherboard it was throwing fits.
Apparently the KT133A and 686B are very different from the KT133 and 686A.
Due to crackling and lock ups I caved in and reformatted my drives and
reinstalled Windows 2000. To my dismay this did not resolve the problems.

After spending 30 some hours working on the problem I got the crackling down
to where I could only notice it if I was really concentrating on it. This
was using George's latency fix, Abit beta 4.32 4in1, and Abit BIOS ZT. PCI
master time-out set to 0, Delay Transaction and PCI master Read Caching. The
lock ups were still there, and seemed to get worse since the crackling was
greatly reduced. The lock ups only happen when I'm playing games (Half-Life,
Quake III, Unreal Tournament, etc.). I've had the system up for over two
days just Windows. I was playing music through Winamp in that time.

Last weekend I was playing Counter-Strike (Half-Life mod) and Urban Terror
(Quake III mod) for about five hours. In that time my system locked up about
30 times. Sometimes it will not lock up for an hour or two, but others it
will constantly lock up. Like I'll reboot and it will lock up within 5
minutes. The other night my Counter-Strike clan lost a match because my
system locked up four times during the match. This is just intolerable.

The other day I removed my SB Live Value and was able to play Counter-Strike
for three hours without any lockups. When I put the card back in the
crackling is back, and nothing I've done has gotten rid of it. I've tried
the 15 latest BIOSs off of the KT7-FAQ, both George's patch and the VIA one,
latest SB Live drivers, every PCI slot, as well as just using the video card
and sound card, and I've tried disabling UDMA on my hard drives, which only
made my system unbearably slow. I've also tried clocking all my hardware
back to normal speeds which only made the system just as unbearable as with
UDMA off.

This tell me that the problem is with the sound card, but the motherboard
swap tells me it's with the motherboard. I'll just blame everyone and send
this e-mail to Abit, VIA, and Creative Labs. So no blaming each other. ;) I
would really appreciate it if you could call me at 856-869-4857 to help fix
this. I've tried everything mentioned on Paul's KT7 FAQ
(http://go.to/kt7faq). My system config is below. Thanks for your
assistance.

I sympatize. I have not been able to load any bios update since WW (very
stable in WW). I've pretty much done everything you have and did indeed
locate the problem to be SB live. I've tried clean installs etc, but as soon
as I load the SB multimedia drivers, wham lock up on boot in win98, winMe
and XP.
You may want to try WW, that's what I'm using til I replace this SB live POS
card with something else.

Cory,
I'm using a KT7 motherboard (900 Thunderbird) and the Soundblaster Live 5.1 card
and have the identical problem you described with lockups. Processor
temperature is normal (51 degrees C) Quake 3 Arena runs great, no lockups, but
Half-Life I can go only between 5 and 20 minutes before a lockup of the game
with the sound looping over and over.... Like you, I have tried everything in
Paul's KT7 FAQ (http://go.to/kt7faq) including reinstalling Windows 98 SE
without ACPI and then installing just the sound card, using latest VIA 4in1
drivers, ZT BIOS, etc. etc. I also tried putting my hard drive and CDRW on the
same IDE controller as some have suggested that would fix it and still had the
lockups.

One interesting thing that I noticed is one time I powered down the machine,
removed the soundcard, but did not remove the drivers, then rebooted and played
Halflife. Still had the lockup problem!!! There was no problem AFTER I removed
the Creative drivers. I used the latest drivers and only installed the Windows
drivers so it's not a problem with Liveware, DOS Drivers etc. That would
suggest to me a Windows driver problem, but why it's only happening on Abit
motherboards is curious. Could be hardware related too. I wish Abit and
Creative would get in a pissing contest or cooperate to fix this problem.
They're still in phase 1: DENIAL.

Oh I even tried out a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card and STILL had lockups with
that. I have not heard of anyone else still having problems with the Santa
Cruz. I didn't do a clean install of the OS first so it's *possible* there were
remnants of Creative drivers. I hated the Santa Cruz anyway, the software was
cheesy and it was awful for recording with unbelievably high noise levels. At
least I can use the Soundblaster for that and am very pleased with its
capabilities.

If I were a motherboard manufacture I'd probably take the time to test with the
most popular 2 or 3 soundcards out there. So many users have these problems!
We should try and shame these companies into fixing the problem and making this
right for their customers.

Here is Creative labs response, my response to Creative Labs, and Abits
response.

Cory,

Please note that Windows 2000 uses an ACPI HAL on
newer motherboards by default, and it may list several
of your peripheral devices on one IRQ, commonly IRQ 9
or 11. In your case, IRQ 11. This does not necessarily
indicate a resource conflict as each device is still
using the IRQ indicated by the BIOS at startup on a
hardware level. To check this, go to Start - Programs -
Accessories - System Tools - System Information -
Hardware Resources - IRQ or Interrupt Request. Search
for the sound card, video card, etc.

< The sound card is on it's own IRQ. I have
reformatted once with ACPI disabled and reformatted
again with it enabled. Neither fixed the problem.

On your system, reboot and access the BIOS and look
for an option for PCI Latency Timer. Try it at 0 and
32, respectively. This number indicates the number of
clock cycles a PCI device must wait before accessing
the bus again.

< I don't have any option for PCI latency timer. I
never have, in any BIOS version. The one thing I have
that may resemble that is PCI master time-out. I can
set this to 0-15. I have tried it at 0 like Abit
recommended to resolve the SB Live + 686B issue and
that fixed nothing.

This helps solve problems if you have one device in
the system that is particularly bus intensive. If
changing the value for PCI latency doesn't resolve the
problem, try enabling the Memory Hole at 15MB-16MB in
the BIOS. Some add-on cards require a 1MB address
space between 15 MB and 16 MB.

< I tried that a long time ago, and again jsut now for
the hell of it. All it did was lock up my system
before it got to teh desktop.

There may still be a conflict, and if there is, try
Disabling "DMA (Direct Memory Access) if Available".

< I tried this a long time ago as well (and again a
few minutes ago), all it did was slow my system to an
unacceptably slow pace.

Also, make sure that "PIO (Programmable Input/Output)
Only" is enabled on both of the IDE controller
channels in the BIOS.

< Same as above paragraph.

I recommend accessing Microsoft's web site at:
http://support.micorsoft.com/support/kb/articles/

The articles that provide important ACPI information
are:
Q244806 Overview of Power Management in Windows 2000
Q216573 How Windows 2000 Determines ACPI Compatibility
Q237556 Troubleshooting Windows 2000 Hardware
Abstraction Layer Issues - *View or Change Installed
Computer Type (This Article is important!)

< Checked all those, nothing there helps.

If you are still experiencing problems, it is
suggested that you go to ABIT's web site for the
motherboard BIOS flash and chipset updates. I
recommend these updates over VIA because they are
specific to your motherboard. You might also update
the drivers for your video card and any other device
in the system that interacts with or runs concurrently
with the soundcard. In addition, check the game
manufacturer's web sites for the latest releases.

< Perhaps you are just a moron, but I would ahve
expected you to _read_ my original message. I clearly
stated everything I have tried. I said I tried all the
BIOSs available, the latest sound card drivers, all
the VIA drivers available (if you had the slightest
idea what you were talking about you would know that
Abit distributes standard, unaltered VIA drivers). If
you had any reasoning skill you would have assumed
that I have all the altest drivers and patches from my
software. I don't think I sound like an incompetent
moron, please don't assume I am.

< I also told you not to blame VIA or Abit. I would
ahve thought anyone with half a brain would understand
that by that I meant do _not_ tell me to go talk to
Abit or look at their website. Especially due to the
part where I stated that I have sent the exact same
message to Abit as well as VIA.

Ann Marie
Creative Labs Technical Support

< Unlike Creative Labs, Abit has treated me well. I
got good, friendly response from a guy who doesn't
consider me computer illiterate and _read my e-mail_.
He did not tell me to do things I ahve already tried.
His e-mails are below. Perhaps you could learn a think
or two from him.

< Anyway, I am now using the Abit 3c BIOS. It has
fixed the crackling issues, but all games still lock
up. They don't lock up when the sound card is removed.

< Sorry for being rude, but I take great offense when
you tell me to do the exact things I've already done,
and then blame Abit for the problems. In the future I
would appreciate it if you would tell me useful
information, and not speak to me as if I am a moron.
Thank you.

Dear Customer,
Is that a 5.1 Live?
Put the sound card in PCI slot 4 and NIC in 2
remove the Dxr3 for now see if it will work or not.
My system at home is very similar to yours
I am using the 3C BIOS with VIA 4.31
having no problem at locking ups.
http://fae.abit.com.tw/download/bios/kt7/index-e.htm
and I can play CS all night with no problem.
My configuration

KT7A RAID
Athlon 1.2Ghz(266)
BIOS:3C
Win2K pro SP2 with VIA 4.31
AGP Creative annihilator 2
PCI 1 : empty
PCI 2 : empty
PCI 3 :Linksys
PCI 4 SB live value OEM not 5.1
PCI 5: nothing
PCI 6: Nothing
ISA : nothing

Two IBM 30 G ATA 100 7200 RPM
RAID 0

IDE 1 CD ROM.

I suggest you load the fail safe default in the BIOS
and see if that will be more stable or not.

Thank you very much.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS upgrade from Abit for KT7A it should be
"ZT"
they have made changes in the Bios Setup Which as they say "Resolves the
Problems"
with SBLive cards.

yes, got my motherboard the other day, and installed 3c first, straight from the
ftp site, and i've had no real problems (lockups)

whilst doing a 1gb/6hour vis on a quake3 map i did get some crackling whilst
playing mp3's, and i only have 512mb memory, so there was ALOT of paging going
on. system = win2k sp2

Sounds like you and I have both been through the list of all the recommended
settings, BIOS'es, patches, etc, etc. The response you got from Creative is
precisely why I didn't call their customer support! They assume you're an idiot
and just don't know how to configure your system. I had a similar conversation
with the person I bought the motherboard from. I told him "I tried the latest
drivers and BIOS" and his only response was "did you try the latest BIOS?"
"Uhhhh...."

There have been very many reports of this lockup problem with the Soundblaster
Live 5.1 and Abit motherboard. One of the FAQ's I read suggested that the
Soundblaster Live (not 5.1) didn't have the same problem. There is a DEFECT in
either the motherboard or soundcard and I've tried all the settings recommended
to try fix this. The fact it's 2 companies, they can blame each other and blame
the customer and never have to resolve this issue.

My system:
Abit KT7
900Mhz Thunderbird
Soundblaster Live 5.1 (MP3)
Maxtor 30GB 7200 RPM drive
HP CDRW (4x4x24)
128MB RAM

Notice on the Abit site is says these BIOS upgrades "MAY" fix problems with
Soundblaster cards. Very clever of them to say "may", keeps it non-commital ;-)

In my case it should say "doesn't".
Unfortunately, they don't have a definitive solution yet. It doesn't work for
the Soundblaster Live 5.1 card.

Actually the guy I've been talking to at Abit has not blamed Creative Labs.
Whetehr he does or not, he isn't telling me, because he knows I don't give a
damn who's fault it is, only that both companies cooperate to resolve the
issue. This is his latest response. I'll give it a try in a bit downloading
a large file at the moment. I'll let you guys know it it works (although I
have a feeling delay transaction or PCI master read caching may start the
crackling but reduce lock ups, never tried time-out of 3 though).

Dear Customer,
Is your sound card Live 5.1 or the regular live sound card?
If you are using regular Live
the settings in the BIOS try these
-
  a.. Delay transaction. enabled
b.. PCI master read caching. enabled
  c.. PCI master time-out 3

Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Jeff Wong

Nope, latest official on theri site is ZT. Any BIOS not listed on the
website should be considered beta (i.e. you get it off their FTP, especially
if it's in the folder called "Beta" ;) ).

well, i thought my problem had gone away.. but here's an interesting one.
previously i'd chosen to pick 'optimized settings' in the bios. and i only
receieved problems when really pushing the pc..

since then i've had another unsucessful attempt at overclocking the pc and had
to reset the bios. I forgot to pick optimized settings, and now i always get
crackly sound in winamp..

arse.. feck..

That was my response from the dumbasses at Creative Labs. Anotehr response
with absolutely nothing that could possibly help. Perhaps those bumbasses
don't understand taht the rest of the world is about a million times smarter
than tehm and they should all kill themselves off. I will not be buying any
Creative Labs hardware anymore.

Anyway, I resolved the issue. Earlier today I found out my videoc ard was
overheating (I forgot to plug the fan back in when Iw as working on it
yesterday). After plugging the fan back in the fixes Abit said to try
worked. My system appears to be back to a rock solid state now. Thanks a lot
to the guys at Abit, and may you Creative Labs freakers rott in hell.

Sierra products which do not have "Windows 2000" printed on the Systems
Requirement Label
as a recommended operating system were not designed or tested for Windows
2000. Programs
which indicate Windows 95 and/or Windows 98 as the recommended operating
system may not
function as designed with Windows 2000. It is important to note that
Windows 2000 is an
operating system primarily designed for business applications and is
intended to be a
continuation of the Microsoft Windows NT family of operating systems.

You can try the steps listed below as well as use the Windows Update feature
to download
any compatibility updates for Windows 2000 that Microsoft has released here
under product
updates:

http://windowsupdate.com

Microsoft has
broadened the original focus to address some minor compatibility issues with
a few of the
more popular home/entertainment/gaming applications.

Note You must be an administrator to install this update on your computer.

Go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/deployment/appcompat/default.
asp

Otherwise the problem you are describing could be a result of several
issues. Please try
following troubleshooting steps:

1. Set Desktop Colors
2. Close background programs
3. DirectX Diagnostic Tool / Update Drivers

1. Set Desktop Colors

Run the desktop in 16-bit (high) color when playing the game. To ensure the
display is
set to 16-bit color, click with the right-hand mouse button on the Windows
desktop and
choose PROPERTIES from the menu that pops up. Then, click on the SETTINGS
tab from the
Display Properties window that comes up. Change the color palette to 16-bit
(high) color
if it is not already set there. Then, click the OK button from the Display
Properties
box. If Windows prompts to restart the computer for the new settings to
take effect,
go ahead and restart.

2. Close TSRs

-Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key.
-Then click on TASK MANAGER.
-Click on the tab labeled Applications. Anything listed as running here
will need to be
closed.
-Use the 'End Task' button on the bottom of the box to close any programs
that TASK MANAGER
shows running.

3. DirectX Diagnostic Tool / Update Drivers

a. Make sure all drivers on the computer are DirectX compatible. To do this:

Click on the Start button, go to Find, and select Files and Folders. In the
NAMED dialogue
box, type "dxdiag.exe" . Within the LOOKIN dialogue box, ensure that the
[C:] drive is
selected and then click the FIND NOW button. After the file is found,
double-click on
the file name ("dxdiag.exe") displayed in the larger box which appears
below. This should
bring up a DirectX Diagnostic Tool Window.

Click on each of the Display and Sound tabs and make sure all listed drivers
are listed
as Certified. This will be shown under the Drivers section on the upper
right-hand side
of each tab. Also, performance tests can be ran on the drivers from the
Display and
Sound tabs. If any drivers are not certified or if there are any problems
running the
tests, contact the computer manufacturer to update the drivers.

b. Regardless of the results, it may be beneficial to update the video and
sound card
drivers. The hardware manufacturer may have released newer drivers that
improve
performance/compatibility or, in some cases, the actual install of the
drivers may suffer
 from some form of corruption.

To update the drivers, first, go to the system property window by
right-clicking on the
My Computer icon. Click on Properties, click on the Hardware tab. Click on
the Device
Manager button and click on the "+" symbol in front of display adapters (the
video card
should drop down) and the "+" symbol in front of sound, video and game
controllers (the
soundcard should drop down). After writing down the type and model of the
card(s),
contact the system vendor for recommendations as to where to go to obtain
drivers for
the card(s). Another option is to go to the card manufacturers' websites.
To try
to find their sites, use the following sites which have most card
manufacturers' websites
listed: http://www.winfiles.com or http://www.drivershq.com . Next, go to
each card
manufacturer's website and go to their Drivers section. Then select and
download the
driver with the most current date associated with the particular model card
as listed
within the device manager for the version of Windows 2000 installed on the
computer.
(Note: it is still a good idea to verify with the system vendor that the
drivers
which are trying to be obtained are going to be the best for the system).

If the problems persist there isn't going to be much more you can do besides
revert
to playing the game under an operating system that it was designed for.

I had the same problem with my SB card. Everything was solved when I set the
memory hole and CPU to PCI disabled. No lockups no crackling. I soon as I
change the settings back, same problem. Hope it works.
