Advice wanted on new CD writer..which to buy?

Hello All.
I am hoping the wise souls in this NG who helped advise me which burner to
buy about 5 years ago might have some good advice on which to buy this time.
My old SCSI Ricoh is still going well but I would like to get a new drive
that can accept a wider range of media, as the Ricoh is very fussy on media.
I see much talk about Plexwriter and LiteOn, I am looking at a 24 or 36 X
unit.IDE
My primary use is the copying of bootleg music concerts, so being able to
burn great quality audio at 4X is a must.

Also will these modern burners still work on my Celeron 366 with 64 meg of
RAM? (Win 98)

Should I get one with or without burn-proof?
Hope someone has the time to give me some advice, or at least get me asking
the right questions.

thanks

Your right many groups ( read Gratefull Dead - Phish) actively encourage
concert CD's. Those that don't well I have tons of Dylan boots and still
have bought every single CD he has released. Now to your questions:

1. With an older system, I would think any CDRW would be fine. I'm not sure
if it would work fine with a high speed burner ( 32x - 40x) but I don't see
why not.

2. I would look at the Cendyne 32x or the Lite On 32x or 40x. The 32x can
be found on Pricewatch.com for around $70. Be sure to check
www.resellerratings.com BEFORE buying as some of the lowest priced vendors
can't be trusted. WWW.NEWEGG.COM is a good vendor.

  Good luck

Both drives are amongst the most popular around, for the reason that they
give the least trouble. The LiteOn in particular offers impressive value for
money.

If money is not an issue, then I would recommend the Plextor SCSI 121032S
drive. This is built to last, and offers outstanding audio performance - and
you already have a SCSI interface. It will also write at 4x on suitable
media. Note though that with more recent faster drives and media that you
will probably not produce the optimum burn performance at low speed.

Current fast IDE drives frequently produce their best performance at much
higher speeds - I would suggest fast enough to avoid burnproof cutting in
(circa 12x - 16x)

Burnproof is an essential feature of the fastest drives and activates to
prevent error loss as the drives 'change gear' to burn at progressively
faster speeds across the disc.

If your strictly interested in best quality audio cd burning,
Yamaha is the best choice. It has an audio master mode
that burns larger and more precise lands and pits.

I just replaced my 8x Plexwriter with a Yamaha 3200.
I use it only for burning audio cd's. I suppose it does well as
a general purpose burner as well, but I have an Liteon 24x for
general use.

The only problem that I found with the disc burned from Yamaha is
reading problems in DVD players. Otherwise the cds burned on Yamaha
actually sound better than those burned 4x on my old Plextor(considered
to be the best audio burner ever built). There is actually test evidence
to back up my subjective opinion. Nerospeed actually shows
better readibility of disc burned with Yamaha's audio master mode.

Whatever you end up buying, DO NOT use burnproof or other
buffer underrun protection for audio cd's. The gaps that are on disc
do cause ticks and tracking problems.

Are there any independent reviews that have verified that this is anything
more than marketing fluff? I'd like to read a review written by someone
other than the Yamaha PR department... <?>

I have a Sanyo-based 32x drive with the latest gen of BurnProof,
and burn CDs at full blast an regularly dump the buffer twice per disc.. they
all play perfectly in my home player and in both cars. Perhaps you're
referring to earlier BP revisions, which left longer gaps?

I belive either cdrwcentral or cdr-info did such an review.
I didn't believe the hype at first. Bought the Yamaha
at Best Buy knowing that I could return it within 30
days to get Plextor 40x. The Yamaha's a keeper.
Out of curiosity from reading these reviews,
I also ran some informal readibility test with disc
made on the Yamaha nad my old 8x Plextor.
Using cdspeed disc burned in Yamaha's audio master
mode were consistently easier to read on the Yamaha burner,
the Plextor 8x and and Plextor Ultraplex. My Pioneer dvdrom
had problems with these disc though.

These test are of course totally meaningless unless the disc
do sound different. In my home stereo system, I and my freinds
can hear difference with Yamaha audio mastered disc.

These improvements to audio quality are significant enough,
that I'm going to reburn 100's of lp's to cd again. It is a pity
that no once has invented recordable sacd so that I can fully
capture the sound quality of my lp's that will never be
properly released on cd or sacd.

Hi all,
I'd just like to express my thanks to the popel who replied constructively
to this subject heading.

I have decided to go with a Lite On 32X due to the fact it is about 50
cheaper than the near equivalent Plextor here in Australia

thanks

I do not think you will be disatisfied with your Liteon CD-RW purchase! I
particularly like the fact that is not "picky" at all when it comes to
blanks to use (jury still out IMO on longevity of data recorded on cheapos,
I have not had significant data loss from any cheapos - but stored rather
carefully too.)

I wouldn't get the liteon or the Cyber drives if I was you.
Problems with keeping the data after a few months is a issue.

Also don't be tricked into getting a 40x write burner.
They are no faster than a fair few 16x write burners.

Get the 16x although these may not be around any more.
I think the base model is now 24x.

16x and 40x both take about 6 mins to do a 700Mb burn.
It's just bragging rights to get a faster burner. The faster burners
have a higher failure rate so just get the 24x. If you can get a 16x
then do that.

Good brands. HP if you can still get them. They are moving towards dvd
burners. Plextor, Sony, Yamaha, maybe BenQ/Acer, maybe just BenQ as
they took over Acer.

Stay clear of liteon or the cyber drives.

The mechanism is exactly the same as the 'name brand' units,
so if longevity of data with a LiteOn is a problem, it's ALSO a
problem for most other names.

>Also don't be tricked into getting a 40x write burner.

If you burn a few CDs once a week or less, the difference won't be noticeable.

If you burn 20 CDs at a time, you WILL certainly see the difference,
and _NO_ 16X burner can burn as fast as a 40X.

How's your new burner doing?
I've had a couple BSOD's from mine, I'm not sure why. And I can't seem to get my
system to burn at more than 35x from the HD, but then it's 32x media too. Plenty
of user errors too, I'm new to Nero. Apart from that, it's pretty hot, and I'm
trying to track down a LiteOn DVD ROM drive to go with it.

I had a lite on and had nothing but problems.
There are also problems with those cyberlink drives and winxp.

The latest Mitsubishi 40x takes 6 mins to do a cdr 700Mb disk.
My 16x burner takes 6 mins to do a 700Mb cdr disk. I have a second pc
bought last week and it has a 24x burner and it also takes 6 mins.

I use 24x Verbatim Datalifeplus 80 min media.

I have a Yamaha that has never really worked as well as it should,
and THAT is after having it replaced 3 times.

My 2 Cue!/QPS units, and my new LiteOn, all work perfectly.

Mine too.

My QPS (NEC mechanism) and my Yamaha 16/10/40s both take about 5 1/2 minutes.

LOL Dan G. I agree quite a boon to us all that this technology has matured
at it has. So many new users of the technology now. Prices are just
absolutely mind blowing to me considering I paid $450 for a Ricoh MP6200S
and an Adaptec SCSI card years ago!

Didn't anyone notice yesterdays date?
Of course 40x is faster than a 16x.

I wouldn't get a liteon though.
Been there and done that.

FWIW, I just bought an internal IDE TDK 32/10/40 for US$140 with a $30 rebate.
Minimum system requirements are: Pentium 266 MHz, 64 MB of RAM, and 200MB HD
space. It works like a dream.

I also bought a TEAC 540E 40X CD-ROM drive for $45 to go along with it. This
thing rips.

I have to say that this system is killer, and I recommend either of these
units.

I purchased the TDK 321040X approximately 3 weeks ago, and I am very
impressed with it so far. I looked at it for a couple of weeks prior to
buying it and kept monitoring this newsgroup to see what others had to say
about it. It was mentioned very often, but I am glad I purchased it.

I just bought a Yamaha CRW3200EZ (24x10x40) Internal CD Burner last
nite. I got home and had no problems installing it and it fired up on
the first try. Comes with Nero Burning Rom software which is new to
me but love it. I was able to burn a 3 inch Mini CD which holds about
185mb of info and works like a charm.

I would recommend trying this out...got for $179.99 at Best Buy with
$30 rebate. I read a lot of reviews on this model before making the
purchase and talked to a few people about it...
