I'm a bit disappointed; I expected at least an increase of twice the speed... Previous burner: Sony 8x4x32x Replacement: Lite-on 24x10x40x Burning data, I tested the speed, and the following is the results I got... Sony: 527MB in 8 min 13 Lite-on: 527 MB in 5min13 Wow! A speed increase of a whole 36% WHOPPY DO-DA!!! :) Can't even manage to be twice as fast! Yet they claim three times faster (24/8) Also, another thing, with the Lite-on I burnt 2 copies of the same thing. The first was on a Mitsui Gold CDR @ 16x (max speed allowed - as reported by Nero) The second was on the new GAT CDR @ 24x (max speed allowed - as reported by Nero) Guess what? They both literally took the exact same time to finish! Melbourne, Australia

Welcome to the real world. Soon you'll get over the shock of discovering that numbers made up by marketing types cannot begin to accurately describe the CD burning process. You may wish to read some published reviews of CD-RW drives, where their actual performance in a typical computer system is measured and compared. Mark (my email domain is net)

That's not right! I have the Plextor 241040a and I can write a 650 mb disk in 3:45 and usually the 700 mb disk in 4:00. Are you sure you're using 24x media? I purchased Fuji 24x media that can't burn any faster than 16x, which is about the same speed as you stated. Try some other disks and see if that doesn't improve. I don't know what's going on. Every second the light alternates between orange and red. Is this normal? Also, does the "Recorder Buffer Level / State" (if you have Nero) keep going up and down in percentage fast on yours? i also burnt from both an ata66 and ata100 hard drive and it didn't make a difference. What speeds should I expect?

Hi If you disable burn proof you will see a increase in speed.........the again at the risk of a coaster....ya takes ya choice. I don't have that particular drive, but I have a 24x drive and the only time my buffer did that was when Windows update installed a driver which caused my IDE controller to act really... uh... hiccuppy. Before that happened and since I fixed it my buffer stays steady at 98%. I also got a lot of buffer underruns due to that problem. If your buffer runs near dry and the buffer underrun protection kicks in then it will lengthen the burn time. -- ybbxvatyvxrnobeantnvayvivatyvxrnurergvpyvfgravatgbneguheyrrerpbeqfznxv atnyylbhesevraqfsrryfbthvyglnobhggurveplavpvfznaqgurerfgbsgurvetrareng vbaabgriragurtbireazragnertbaanfgbclbhabjohgnerlbhernqlgborurnegoebxra

I just did the same upgrade and the LiteOn was a huge improvement over the Sony. Your system may not be configured correctly. All test sites, as well as my own testing, puts 700 meg at around 4 min or less. Took 2:34 to write Nascar4. Sims Hot Date, a SD2 protected CD, 690meg in size, wrote in 3:45. (SD2 was primary reason for upgrade, speed was added bonus). But the best surprise was with media used. Using CloneCD and 18 month old 12x generic media, was still able to do a write at 24x, using the original Sims game, (SD1). Less than 4 minutes! I've heard these drives could burn 16x media at 24x, but using 12x at 24x, WOW! Enable DMA on your burner. The reason it's going from red to orange is because buffer underrun protection is activating. Hi-speed burners need to run in DMA mode to burn at full speed. If you don't know how to activate DMA within your OS, post back which version of Windoze your running and we can help. i think its your computer what are your specs not much ram?? processor a bit outdated your getting lots of buffer underuns!! on my lite-on 24x i can write 700mb/80 mins in 4 mins dead mine :- celeron 500 256 mb ram on that buffer stays solid at 99% "Chris Armitage" <chrisarmitage@blueyonder.co.uk> wrote in message news:SOf58.3218$b61.25589876@news-text.cableinet.net... > Mirai x24x10x40 > 670 MBs data onto 80minCD = 4.15mins > Chris. > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.317 / Virus Database: 176 - Release Date: 21/01/2002 > >

Again, that depends on the media. I found that Ritek 12X will burn at 24x. Fuji 16x burn at 16x. Prodisc 16x burn at 24x, Mitsumi all speed burn at 24x, et al. Yet they claim three times > faster (24/8) your math is a bit wonky there... the numbers you list would indicate about a 57.5% speed increase 527MB in 8m13s = 64.1MB/min 527MB in 5m13s = 101.0MB/min increase = 36.9 MB/min (36.9 / 64.1) * 100 = 57.5% increase anyways, try different media, and watch the buffer as well... if the buffer underrun protection is activating much, then your burn speeds will drop quite a bit also, you need to look at the method your drive uses for changing speeds. since cds are burned from the inside track out, the speeds are lower at the beginning of the disc than at the end. you should see a better increase (average speed) if you burn a longer cd (650-700MB)

So, y'all remember to check your blanks and also check the DMA settings on your IDE, particularly if you're running win2k and your burner is not on the primary controller, because win2k will set that to PIO only by default. YMMV, but in my experience there seems to be a "line" between media rated 8x or below and media rated above 8x. In the recorders I've used, media rated 8x or below will not burn at higher speeds, and media rated above 8x will generally burn at any speed your system can support. I've seen a similar limitation on CD-RW with the line being at 2x. This could just be my burner though. It's not the software because I use three diffferent packages. Pt

The reason that you get better bitrates on longer burns is that the set-up time at the beginning of the burn is less of a percentage of the entire burn. This setup time is not proportional to your speed multiplier. If you start counting seconds from the point that the actual track writing begins it should be the same, excluding rounding errors. Also there is the session closing time at the end to consider, which is not exactly proportional to speed either. Pt

Definitely your burner, not all can do it. I have a Plextor 24X and I can burn 8x media at 24X with no problems. I can also burn 10X-rated CD-RW media at 24X using CD-R format (and can still erase the disc after).

Cheap media has a hard problem holding the data once it's burnt. You get what you pay for. I have no failed burns and more importantly I don't lose the data unlike the cheap crapy media. My mates have found the same thing, they now use either the verbatim or mitsubishi with AZO. Most everything else was a waste of time. Some burn ok but don't hold the info on the disk to well. Perfect examples of this was when I had pics of the family backed up onto cd's and when I went to restore them the pics were only a third ok and the rest of the image and this black/purple colours distorting the image.
