DVD video camera -> dvd question

Family asking me and I don't have a clue (no wisecracks),
and I could use a quick overview regarding DVD
recording for PC and/or TV.
I tried google but got thousand of hits - all very specific though.
Or if the wrong group, I could use a pointer.
I couldn't find anything for DVD comparable to alt.comp.periphs.cdr
Thanks for any advice/pointers

Specifically,
My brother bought a movie camera for xmas
and would like to make DVDs of camera output.
So say he records an hour worth of holiday video - now how to get it to
media?
For the moment, money not the issue, just the big picture:
First of all, how much disk space is an hour's worth of video ?
(and if - like VCRs - SP or SLP is a concept, just pick one)
Secondly, how much fits on a DVD ?
He wants to play it back on a TV NOT a PC.
How do you interface with it ? On a PC, I imagine there's
a utility (like EZCD), but on TV, how would you customize it?
Or can you ?

1. Do you have an output cable (USB) from camera to
PC - play it back - save to disk - make DVD ?

2. Buy a "DVD burner" for the stereo and plug the camera
in there ? Hit Play on camera and record it to
a blank DVD there ?
3. Once #1 or #2 works, how to copy it to spend to family
all over the country ?
Do they have DVD to DVD burners for
' stereo equipment' ? (or whatever it's called these days )

Also, what is the lingo to refer to
"hooking it up as 'media equipment' " ? vs PC hookup.

And also :
In searching for info, I did see that DVD's can
hold about 4.7gb . And the HP's showed 2.4x,2.4x,8x.
What's the x equal in data transfer rates for a DVD ?
Exactly how LONG would it take to record that 4.7gb of video ?

You can only get about 1 hour of high quality video to a 4.7Gb disc.
Is your video camera analog or is it digital that can hook up via a
firewire port?

For every hour of capture onto your hard drive gobbles up about 15Gb
of hard drive space. You need a separate hard drive for capturing to
and a very fast pc.

I use the pioneer a05 dvd burner which is about $630 AUS and comes
with good software unlike some other brands of dvd burners.

Just buy a dvd recorder (not the pc type) hook up the super vhs lead for
the video and the RF leads for the sound. Push play on the camera and
record on the dvd recorder. I have yet to see dvd recorders with component
leads but i live in canada.

I spent the day xmas shopping at electronics stores and was asking/browsing
for dvd burner - Pc info.

At CompUSA, I saw a product from Adaptec which said " Record DVD from your
camera to your CDRW" !
It records it in VCD format so that it's viewable on a dvd player ! Cost
$179.
VideOh!CD is the name. They do make other versions of it too:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/prodfamilymatrix.html?sess=no&cat=%
2fTechnology%2fVideo%2fVideo+Capture+and+Creation

It was late and I didn't have a lot of time to research but from what I read
on the box, it looked pretty good.
Anyone used it before ?
With this solution, no new hw is needed: they can use what they have.

They is plenty of free software which will convert DVD format to VCD format.
Free but time consuming..

After re-reading my original note I think I should rephrase it -
I'm not just trying to convert a DVD to VCD
This OhVideo prg will take input from camera => VCD

I want to playback a movie on a camera (as input) and have it saved to PC
then burned to a medium that will play on a DVD player. (As VCD will)
Originally I thought I'd need a DVD BURNER, but now it seems that I don't if
I can use this software.
Anyone used the sw (or similiar) to avoid buying a DVD burner ?

This is pretty simple these days given enough $$ ;)

You'll need:
1) reasonably fast PC (PIII/800/256mb ram min)
2) reasonable OS (Win2k or XP)
3) reasonable amount of fast disk space (get a 60 or 80gig 7200rpm
drive) ($200)
4) DV camcorder with firewire (1394) i/o ($600)
5) 1394 card ($50)
6) DVD burner (HP200i +RW, $500)

Your DVD burner will come with the software needed - Sonic MyDVD bites
but works fine for novice users, Ulead VideoStudio6 works better but
is still pretty simple. There are tons of other DVD authoring apps out
there from $50 to $1000.

Shoot video, dump to PC via 1394 into your DVD authoring tool, edit,
create menus, burn to DVD.

DVDs hold between 1-2 hours depending on quality - for commercial
DVDish quality it's 60-90 minutes, VHS quality 120+minutes/disk.

Time to get from video to disk is
camera->pc 1x (ie, 60 minutes of video takes 60 minutes to transfer)
pc->dvd 1-10x (depends on sw and burner used)
