Anything special about playing cda files on an old (8x) drive in XP ? Via IDE cable - not little 4 pin cable. Brand new PC with XP. Added an old CD (Teac58-E) to do disk-disk copy if needed etc. The Teac works fine EXCEPT for .cda files .I insert a store bought CD into the drive and WMP pops up and after 10 seconds it shows the label (it's the right label) and shows that it's playing. Well the CD light is blinking but no audio. After 10-15 seconds there may be .5 second of audio then another 10-15 seconds and .5 second of audio ( the audio counter shows 00:01 rather than the actual 20-30 seconds). The cd/system is busy doing something - other windows hang etc while this is going on. then maybe after a minute, it'll play fine for a little while, then back to no /bad audio. MP3's are fine, data is fine. This is the same drive I used on my Win2000 box for years, and it was fine. Several CD's - same. After 20 attempts 1 will play fine. Hit stop - close WMP and reopen - the problem is back. Only variable is WMP closed/reopened. I've check/unchecked the "enable digital" and rebooted - same thing.I thought maybe it had something to do with RealPlayer/WMP conflict. I uninstalled Realplayer - same thing. I went to Teac.com - it (and Microsoft) shows that it's XP compliant etc. I haven't yet r/r with another drive from my Win2000 box, but I really don't think it's hw. Using the onboard audio (Compaq 5420 Presario). Latest updates . Anyone been here ? Something I'm overlooking ? Went into WMP and chose to have it as default everything .

You need the cable from the drive to the sound card. I had one in there - 4 pin CD to CD1 jack on the motherboard - same thing. It wasn't until tonight that I tried to use this Cd player for music. I do get internittent sound. I thought I needed that cable. Spent $5 for it today (my old one had different end on it (tiny vs this one which is the same on both ends)) and the CD is the same either way. Does the .cda output go to this 4 pin cable ? I couldn't figure how the factory CDRW works fine via the same IDE cable (cda files too), but it does. After I hooked up the new cable and cda files were bad, I figured to try it wothout the cable - same thing. Why / how does it require the 4 pin cable ? Any setting I need to change ? Thanks. Earlier CD-ROM drives and earlier operating systems only supported analog audio, which is what the 4-pin cable provides. You need to connect the cable between the CD-ROM drive and the sound card. Newer CD-ROM drives and newer operating systems (like WinXP) support digital audio, which is transfered over the IDE cable. No need to connect the 4-pin cable. Old CD-ROM drive with new operating system requires you to use analog audio (so need the 4-pin cable). You may need to go to Control Panel for that CD-ROM drive, go to Properties and UNcheck "Enable Digital CD Playback". Hope this helps, SB

I hooked up the 4 pin cable again - same thing. I cleared the "use digital audio box " (messing with this all day)under drive properties also. Lots of combinations - the result never changes. It's as if, by default, it uses the IDE cable rather than this 4 pin cable ?? Ignoring the cable for a while... If I open Explorer-rightclick-explore this CD then select a file and play: It does CD activity for 10 seconds then I hear the first note of the song, another 10 seconds.... meanwhile if I can get the attention of the original explorer window, it's hung. I have to do an end process to close it. When I look at task manager - there are 2 instances of WMP. I killed them both but only one goes away. What's that about ? Is it supposed to always be there ? This is a brand new install - new machine last week. This is the first time I've tried the Cda files. I had installed Realplayer and Quicktime (Reason for getting XP was the audio/video uses). I deinstalled Realplayer. I didn't bother deinstalling Quicktime. In Quicktime there are no settings to really mess with for .cda I don't have another box to compare to, so the help is appreciated. I may have missed it. Do you have a sound card or is the sound on the motherboard? In either case, you might have to fiddle with bios settings to straighten out this digital/analog situation. Too, why not contact Compaq? "Bobb" <rjschmoe@nospam_netscape.net> wrote on 20 Apr 2002 > I hooked up the 4 pin cable again - same thing. Cleared that "enable digital" box on the drive properties. THEN, in WMP-tools - options - devices - (picked the old CD) - properties, ANALOG playback selected, now it works. I thought that I had done that about 20 times before posting, but perhaps a combo of checking those boxes and then rebooting and cabling fixed it, but I couldn't get it before. Thanks for the help. Side note: I thought that since XP recognized my old CD as a Teac CD58-E , it would have selected the proper setting when installing the drive. I guess I'm giving them too much credit again. It did crash the app (WMP or RealPlayer) 5-6 times while I was trying to get it going, and once when I ejected the CD while it was attempting to play, it crashed XP. I'm sorry, I had forgotten about the setting in Media Player. I remember that WinMe was intelligent in recognizing which CD-ROM drive was capable of playing digitally. Not a clue as to why WinXP lost that capability. Buster
