Backup using CD-RW

MY HARDWARE:
Macintosh G3 (beige, 233 MHz, 352 MB RAM, 20 GB HD)
Belkin PCI "combo card" (FireWire+USB)
QPS external FireWire 12x/10/x32x CD-RW drive w/ Teac mechanism

MY SOFTWARE:
MacOS 9.2.2
Toast 5.1.2
Dantz Retrospect Express 4.3c

----------------------------------------

My current solution for backing up my data to CD-RW isn't working, and I'm
wondering if...

(1: ...Toast could be the problem

(2: ...there may be another solution out there, maybe one that either is
compatible with Toast or maybe even works with Toast, that could replace my
current solution.

When I first bought this QPS CD-RW drive several months ago, I also
purchased Retrospect Express (aka "Retro") with the expectation I could use
this hardware and software to make backup of my computer's hard disk. It
never worked. Dantz said Retro did not yet support this CD-RW drive's Teac
mechanism. They told me they would notify me when a patch became available
for Retro. I'm still waiting, and not inclined to upgrade to version 5.

Retro consistently either crashes or rejects the media. You can stand on
your head and it still won't make any difference.

I'm wondering if there are any other backup solutions out there that would
do what Retro does and without all the BS. I intend to migrate to OS X
eventually, so I'm hoping to find a good Carbonized solution. I'm also
hoping the software will either not conflict with Toast or even work
cooperatively with it.

I tried downloading LaCie's new freeware SilverKeeper, but the literature
indicates it does not directly support CD-RW drives and SilverKeeper doesn't
seem to be able to make backups of only select folders.

Any ideas?

I tried contacting LaCie, and this is what they had to say:

Walt,

SilverKeeper can only work with CD-RW drives that are compatible with
Apple's Disc Burner or DirectCD.

To use with Toast, would require using Toast's ability to create a virtual
disc image, use that as the destination, and then use Toast to burn the
image. This would be a manual process.

SilverKeeper

What a helpful intelligent insight you give to this query Nonya. I hope
when you need help everyone completely ignores your top posted meaninless
witter. You're an idiot and shouldn't be allowed near a computer or any
internet or networked resource.
