SB Live! Problem with ASUS Motherboard
#48
Author: Chris Leavitt

I am suffering random lockups which seem to be associated with my SB Live!
Value card. I have disabled the card and used onboard sound and everything
is ok. The lock ups occur mainly while playing games but have happenned
while playing mp3s and watching dvds. The system completely hangs and the
last sound played is repeated over and over.

My motherboard is a ASUS AV7-E. I have the latest VIA (4.31) drivers. I have
the latest LiveWare! 3.0 drivers and I have the latest BIOS update (1002B).
I dont know where to turn next.

I have tried reserving IRQ 5 for PCI slot 2 (the one the card is in) but
this doesn't seemed to have stopped it either.

Some help me please!!!!!!!

    Thanks,
    Chris.

Have you tried diabling soundblaster16 emulation in device manager? This
frees an IRQ without affecting Windows software and games.

There is a VIA/soundblaster patch ( VIA PFD ) but it does make the chipset
run heater, 30 before 38 after. If I find the link, I'll let you know.

Actually I believe 3 and 6 are shared. as are 4 and 5. 2 should be the
unshared one as far as other slots go. 1 shares with the AGP.

However so long as you have nothing in 6 then putting it in 3 is fine, likewise
with the 4/5 slot.

I have the same motherboard. And I do like to help. I am using
Windows 2000 thought. And my bios version is 1002c. I know, you can
only find 1002b on their web site. Mine came with 1002c somehow. Let
me know if any other informations I can give you.

Do you get these lock-ups when you run without the card?

On the contrary, make sure the bios is set so that plug and play is
disabled...

Let the bios do the assigning of hardware resources.

I never had a SB live but I got sick of the lockups associated with Via
chipsets. I junked my Gigabyte 7zx-1 and got a DFI MB based on the AMD 760
chipset, not one lockup since! It almost feels strange having a "normal" PC.

This post pretty much made me go out and buy a new MB, everything in there
about the lockups applied to me:
