One of my friends has just acquired a hand-held grey-scale scanner. Can't remember the make off hand I'm afraid. When the board is plugged into the IBM compatible PC, and the machine rebooted, either his mouse stops working or his modem stops working. His mous is on COM2 and the modem is internal, on COM3. I have had a look for jumpers on the scanner board in case of conflict, but there are no jumpers at all. The Windows software allows a change of IRQ setting for the scanner, but ALL of these settings work, with no help to the functioning of the modem or mouse. He has no manual either unfortunately! Can someone please suggest something - other than unplugging the scanner board when he wants to dial up the internet!! Cheers, Chris Watson

You have to find an IRQ which does not conflict with COM2 and COM3. (i.e., IRQ4 and IRQ3 won't work. You will need to use IRQ7 or IRQ5 (probably 5 is best since usually LPT1 uses IRQ7).

My friend is away for the weekend, but when he gets back, I'll find out what make it is!! There are definetly NOT any kind of dip switch, button, slider, jumper, etc. on the board itself. If there were, it would be simple!! I forgot to mention that the scanner does actually work, but with ALL IRQ settings in the software. The only problem is, either the mouse or modem won't work when the scanner's board is plugged in. Chris

I especially feel that this is rather ironic, as I am attempting to get people to be more polite on the demon.* groups in general!! I would like to unreservedly apologise for any offence that may have been caused to any person, animal or object (animate or inanimate), living, or unfortunately deceased. I did not set out to cause offence to anyone and am very grateful to Jon Koerner for his help. I believe that particular offence was taken to the fact that I used caps and exclamation marks in my reply. This was not meant as an offensive remark, rather to make clear a point which I stated in my original posting. Once again, sorry for any distress caused and I hope that this *satirical* reply does not also cause offence and result in my being flamed. Chris Watson
