As I understand it, Deskscan II does not support the "green button". It is far superior (IMHO) to the scan software that came with the 5p, however, and I certainly don't miss the green button. Why push a hardware button when your nose is already in the software and your hands are already on the mouse/keyboard? Try the HP ScanJet Button Manager in the HP ScanJet Software folder on the Start Menu. Correct; the bundled software for the 5p is (by design) intended for the "point and shoot" user, with a minimum number of controls that the user can screw up. The full DeskScan applications (available free via the HP web server) offers far more control over the image, but does not support the button on the 5p. OTOH...perhaps that's an advantage, since the button manager (HPSJBMGR.EXE) is known to be buggy. The most common symptom of its problems is the appearance of a message "Unable to start MPR.DLL" when invoking unrelated applications. HP is aware of the problem but has offered no indication of when (or if) it will be fixed. The workaround is to remove the call to HPSJBMGR from the Registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\hpsjbmgr) or remove the file itself from the system; the only downside to this is the loss of the use of the automatic-scan button. When I've placed something on my HP, my hands are on the scanner and the green button is extremely convenient. Mousing around in a set of cascading menus is relatively time-consuming. It would be even *more* convenient if hpsjbmgr supported DeskScan. It almost does already! If you start it, it pops up a window with available software to select when the button is pressed. Unfortunately, the only software it seems to know about is HP PictureScan. Has anybody figured out how to get it to recognize DeskScan as well? - Jonathan

Hey, Thanks Claude! My HP 5p green button never worked. Although 99% of the time I didn't need it. When I read your post I went into the HP scanner green button program and there it was!! The box for "Enable the scan button" was not checked. I checked it and now it works. Now I can use it that 1% of the time. Thanks again. Claude G.
