Why not get a V3 3000 or something like that..? They are cheap and they are easy to get. Because it is wasted on a K6 300 with a monitor only capable of 800x600. Also, i am not prepared to pay 60 (the minimum price for a new V3 3000). He has NO AGP slot also Ben George <ben@73welly.freeserve.com.removethis> wrote in message news:95h4qh$dn$1@news7.svr.pol.co.uk... > Why not get a V3 3000 or something like that..? PCI VERSION. And a Voodoo 2 will be useless, it is crap. You might as well spend the few extra on a half decent Video Card. Why do you have a V2 and a GeForce DDR? You can't get the effects of both. If you want to use Glide, then get a Glide wrapper for your GeForce. Same here. I am swapping a TNT2 for a Radeon 332 DDR this week, but for 16-bit gaming and Glide optimization, something I still use a lot in driving sims, etc, a pair of V2s in SLI mode still rule. And now we know how stupid you are, no glide wrapper works as well as a V2, even when on a GF2 Ultra. Do you honestly think there will be a defference between a V2 and a V3 at 640x480 - 800x600? Not when coupled with a K6-300. As i said, i am not willing to pay 60, Now fuck off and leave this thread to people who have a brain. I actually want a Voodoo2 myself to work alongside my MX. I still have some old games that work only (and best) with Glide. It might be old but like everyone here, I do agree that they're the best thing to ever come out of 3dfx. Let's face it Glide wrappers don't work as well as Glide itself. It's what it is, a wrapper that adds another layer of code when processing games, which could eventually lead to slower performance on some machines. Same here and the age of a game as nothing to do with it's playability.I still get loads of enjoyment out of my 2 VooDoo 2s as I do out of my MX card and some glide games still rock and look good to me.I also Still play GLQW online and would never be without the V2s for this as open GL is ok but Glide still looks better for this game IMHO.so much so that I keep a spare CL 12 meg just in case one of my main ones goes down and NO!.You can't have it Ben<grin>. PS On this Tbird I get 140 fps in timedemo 1 in QW and can hit over 300 online in timerefresh with my suped up config |-) PPS Why chuck away a good card/s if you have a free slot and it can do an API you may want to use that the newer card can't?

Yup; I still use my V2's (SLI) alongside my GTS. NEVER get any stuttering in CS on my good old V2's. That's far more than I can say for my GTS...why does my FPS sometimes drop to the teens from my cap (85?). Seems like a precache bug to me. And my V2's *STILL* own my GTS in Wheel of Time and Unreal at 640x480. Once again, coming from someone who DOESN"T even USE a Geforce combined with V2's, so how would you know? Can a Geforce play Whiplash in DOS, accelerated? Can a Geforce play Descent 2 accelerated? Can a Geforce Control-F9 to desktop and allow you to restore windows if Glide hangs? Didn't think so. Hahaha..... Although I do have to correct you..there will be a pretty big difference between a single V2 and a V3 at 800x600, but not between SLI'd cards. The V3 would have been AWESOME if it had kept to the 3dfx tradition of doubling the power of what was already possible...e.g., V1 to V2=100% increase, V2-V2 SLI = almost 100% (if your CPU was powerful enough).. if the V3 had come out with a 667 mpixel/sec fillrate (double that of V2 SLI), it would have OWNED, and people wouldnt have been bitching at the lack of 32 bit color, because fillrate would have been king. And then V5...with a GTSU's fillrate (released on time)....oh man.... God, what an idiot. Using a Voodoo2 with any of the high end cards of today is like having a little kid with a slingshot ride on top of a tank. Last time I made this argument someone made the same point about old glide games but there's no way you're gonna tell me that a V2 will run a game faster that a gf2 ultra with a glide wrapper. I've used glide wrappers in the past (for UltraHLE on my girlfriends ati xpert128) and it didnt run much slower on an ati xpert128 so you cant tell me it wont be perfect on a gf2 ultra. Let me tell you something right now. My Voodoo2 SLI runs Wheel of Time at 640x480 in Glide, FASTER than my Geforce2-GTS does in Direct 3D. Even if I kick the GTS resolution down to 320x240, THE V2's are STILL faster. Got a clue yet? Glide rules. The V2's would even be faster than an Ultra at 640x480 in Glide games. Oh ya, and I forgot to say...Lets see YOU Get Whiplash 3D accelerated working with ANY Nvidia card with a glide wrapper ,in DOS mode. Didn't think so. Descent 2-3dfx? Don't think so either. The lists go on and on. If a V2 required tweaking to get old Voodoo graphics games working on it, what makes you think a Glide wrapper would work? You are calling me an idiot, and yet you have not tried a wrapper on a GF2U. Please dont comment on things about which you know nothing. Also, although many glide wrappers work with UltraHLE, there are many more games that will not start unless a proper 3dfx card is detected. Anyway we are loosing sight of the topic in question. Since yeterday I've been looking on www.loot.com for a 2nd hand voodoo 2 card so the link is useful to me. Can anyone help though. I'm a newbie to 3dfx cards. I realize they work off an exiting card but does it matter what card ? ie what about an standard S3 virge 4mb card. Is this ok ? What do they need your existing card anyway ? What's the cheapest card I can get awaqy with and does it matter ? Are voodoo 2 cards OpenGL compatable ? Thanks for any answers... VooDoo 2 cards are 3d only so you need a base PCI/AGP card for your windows GUI(Grpaphical User Interface) to work > What's the cheapest card I can >get awaqy with and does it matter ? Yes and noish.I used to run my old VooDoo 2 with a 2 meg S3 PCI and also on another system an AGP 8 meg S3 card as the VooDoo 2 takes care of the 3d and the 2d card is only needed for things like the game's interface/window's GUI so it doesn't have to be too great but note:many modern games will run bad or have to run on the lowest graphics settings in the game on the card/s as they are old technology now. > >Are voodoo 2 cards OpenGL compatable ? You just had to call names instead of just disagreeing, grow up. An audiophile does not say, "mono is good enough", an artist does not say "paint by numbers is good enough", and someone who enjoys the graphics of a game, just as much as playing, does not say "640x480x16bit is good enough". If that were the case then everybody would still be playing Duke Nukem 3D. If you don't care about the quality of the graphics and only want the game to be smooth and stable, then get a Nintendo. Anybody who uses a computer for games and does not care about this should be using a Nintendo for piece of mind, and not wasting their money. -- bye, Rick <---------------------------------------------------------> Visit http://members.home.net/rsavoie1 *** If you can't afford to replace it, don't overclock it! *** Find more info at the AMD FAQ page: http://www.apushardware.com/faqs/amd/AMD_FAQ/index.php Need help with your Geforce: http://www.geforcefaq.com/ <---------------------------------------------------------> "-FaNaTiC-" <fanatic99@msn.com> wrote in message news:O26tVfTkAHA.176@cpmsnbbsa09... > Spoken like a true idiot. All your other questions have been fully answered so I'm only addressing the one about OpenGL support: Yes, they do support it, but not fully. The only 3dfx card with full support for OpenGL (ie, that could be used in any OpenGL-based program such as 3d modelling programs) is a Voodoo 4/5 series card. The others only support a small number of OpenGL features, typically only those exploited by the Quake engine availiable at the time of their release.
