How can I establish Voice & Video telephony using a Dial-Up PSTN connection (such as the connection we make using Hyper Terminal of Windows) ? What is the software required for that and where can I get it ? Also to establish Video telephony with that communication/telephony software, what type of camera I would require? would the contemporary Webcam work ? Or I'll require any special type of Camera/ Video capture device for that Software? Please clarify in details. Also, with the help of contemporary Webcam, is it possible to record a video in a file? (what is the possible format ? .mpeg or others......??) I am using Windows 98 as my O/S. My modem is "Rockwell Data+Fax+Voice V.90 & K56flex" type. My processor is Cyrix MII. I think its a interesting project, lets help each other in it ! Sincerely Sanjoy IETE India

Video phones normally require an ISDN line with128k for a jerky video and acceptable voice; you need 512k+ for a really acceptable connection. Granted that standard UK telephone lines can carry two voice lines (so BT will DACS a line to split it into 2, reducing modem bandwidth) you will still have problems getting an acceptable video stream down the 50% of the line not needed for acceptable voice transmision. Calculate the size of the image you wish to send, and the number of images per second you wish to send, and that will give you an idea of the bandwidth required. As to software and interworking, most PCs will support TCP/IP over PPP on a dial up link - this is how most dial up PCs connect to ISPs - so any standard webcam and conferencing software (such as NetMeeting) should interwork between two PCs once they are networked together. There should be no more problem than working between two PCs on the same LAN. To reiterate - your problem is not hardware or software, but the choice of a dial up link.
