How to refresh Windows Icons without rebooting?

After writing path, file and index of the wanted icon in the registry, I
would like that the changes are visible immediately. (I checked the
correctness of the Win-Registry!)
Only by changing resolution and number of colors of the screen I succeeded.
What about the ShellIconCache? Is ist important which properties the icon /
iconfiles have (for example colors)?
