MS-BASIC squeezed into teeny ROMs on several of the >early home computers. Quite an achievenment. AHEM. I beg to differ. My Apple IIe uses Applesoft BASIC, which Apple bought from Billy boy, and supposedly he coded it himself, right? Well, I programmed in it for three years, and then reverse-assembled it to see how it worked. On the source-code level it's junk. It had memory allocation problems, some of the commands would crash the system (ever try GOTOing really large line numbers?), and there was virtually no interface for assembly-language add-ins. And aside from all that, it was slow as hell. I saw a BASIC compiler that Billy boy once supposedly wrote back in the way-early eighties. The thing stank; it was four times slower than a compiler that came out a year before it, and it generated object code that was twice as large and ran at roughly about the same speed. Bill is not a competent programmer. If he were, DOS and Windows COULDN'T suck as badly as they do now. EOF.
