Every real OS wouldn't let you at the hardware, just to protect itself from your programs. This is one of the key features, that makes real OS's so stable. If you want to access the hardware, write a device driver. A device driver becomes part of the kernel, and so has access to all hardware, it needs. This is the way, hardware should be accessed. This is the only way, that can ensure, there are no access conflicts. Imagine two pieces of software accessing the same piece of hardware. This probably will lead to catastrophic results. When they both use the same device driver, the device driver can at least serialize the requests, and keep atomic actions tied together. 73, Mario -- Mario Klebsch, DG1AM, M.Klebsch@tu-bs.de +49 531 / 391 - 7457 Institut fuer Robotik und Prozessinformatik der TU Braunschweig Hamburger Strasse 267, 38114 Braunschweig, Germany
