Big Dummy's backup

Hi,

This is an inquiry to see if there is interest in some software I'm
thinking of tidying up for general use.

It is a utility to ease up the hassle of backing up data to floppies for
safety.

This utility is quick and simple in the extreme, in both setting it all
up initially, and then in the daily backup.

I use it myself, plus have installed it on many friends' and associates
computers.

Basically, it handles the daily backup of data files to floppy. I have
found that many many people don't back up daily because of the hassle in
setting up a good backup regime in general, and the hassle involved in
backing up regularly daily anyway.

Also, it uses very few floppies. In 90% of cases, only ONE floppy is used
to do the daily backup, and this one floppy is used for anything up to 3
or 4 months! So you don't end up with dozens of backup floppies.

And, the files are very easily recovered if the need arises.

This utility is not meant for backing up your whole hard drive. This
should be done as well, at least every 3 to 4 months, and nowadays with
large hard drives this is best done to tape.

My utility just handles the daily backup of your data files to floppy. It
works best if you have just normal sized files such as spreadsheets,
word-processing, etc. It is not meant for megabyte files such as large
graphics, large databases, CAD, large desktop publishing, etc... just
files in the tens or hundreds of K's... which is what most of us mostly
have anyway.

I've tried working through other commercial backup utilities, plus those
that come with DOS, Windows and Win95. These were a huge hassle, and in
many cases I simply gave up. Most people don't seem to bother with
backups for this reason, at least not until they have a crash and loose 6
month's work!!

My utility guides you through easy steps in the initial setup (only done
once on installation). Then it's just a matter of clicking on the icon at
the end of each work-day, and feeding in the floppy when asked (usually
only one floppy in most cases).

No decisions to make at the end of the day when you're tired. Just click
on the icon and it all happens automatically and safely!

I'm thinking of calling it "The Big Dummy's backup utility"
I've been using it for years, and many friends and associates have too
where they have not bothered with other more hassling backup systems.

This thing really works, and is so quick and simple I don't know why
other backup systems are so complicated!

So, what are people's thoughts on this? It needs tidying up cosmetically
and I'll do this and put it up as shareware if there is good interest.
Also, what sort of price do you think would be appropriate for a utility
like this?

Please post a message here with your thoughts, and it would also be good
to send me a private email too in case this all scrolls off.

Thanks, Alan Gotlieb
