How to push data to a handheld via SMS?

Hi!

I want to develop an application for a Palm OS based handheld (especially
IBM WorkPad) that gets all data from a server over the internet but has an
offline functionality. The problem is, how to notify the application about
the availability of new data on the server while not online (connected via
an expensive GSM internet connection) without the need for regularly pull?

The only possible mechanism is probably via SMS!?

So I need a permanently connected mobile (with GSM card for Europe):
- mobile permanently connected via cable
- an attached wireless modem
- an attached bluetooth port that is connected to a bluetooth capable mobile
phone

How to automatically check for a received SMS, is there any standard api?
Or is the mechanism special to the used hardware?
Has anyone a source example how to check for a received SMS and read it?

Thanx.

Andreas

Righty, firstly, to pull the sms off the phone, most decent phones (so
not Nokia then!) use the standard etsi AT command set for this. Do a
quick search and I'm sure you'll find it. You could set up a script to
read the response back from the phone then.

Have a look at http://www.woggledog.com/?subject=index for other palm
stuff.
