I purchased a Mozart (BTC 1820) 16-bit sound card, manufactured by Oak Technology, Inc., at a San Francisco computer store (which will remain nameless). One of its two driver installation disks was infected by the NYB virus. Both McAfee SCAN and F-PROT found an infected boot sector on that floppy disk. The infected disk contained CD-ROM drivers. Unlike the sound driver disk, it did not have pre-printed OEM label. Instead, it merely had the word "Mozart" handwritten in ballpoint pen on part of a standard address label. Because the box was not sealed, I do not know whether the virus was shipped with the sound card or if someone had tampered with the package. I identified the NYB virus before it could infect my system; someone else might not be so fortunate. Scan any floppy that's been on another machine before using it on your own! -- Lance Wong The Devil gets his kicks out on Route 666... lancelot@sirius.com
