The Gohip video player represents itself as a pretty basic plug-in for your browser. They tout it as a "Free Video Browser Enhancement." It is only if you read the license agreement or download the software that you find the true nature of the software. The license agreement informs you the installation will do three things as follows: 1. Changes your default homepage to the GoHip website. 2. Changes your default search engine to the GoHip search engine. 3. Your signature line will be modified to promote the Free Video Update. What the license agreement does not tell you is that it is not going to be as simple as changing your default homepage in your browser back to what you prefer. The same can be said of changing your default search engine. Most importantly it does not mention that this is accomplished by modifying your Windows registry and cannot be removed without modifying the registry. The vast majority of computer users are not capable of doing this. When I contacted GoHip's customer service, I was informed with attitude, "...apparently you did not read it, (the license agreement) because it explains to you exactly what the software is and what settings on your computer will be changed if you accept the agreement. In the future, we recommend that you read License Agreements, to be sure that you are getting what you want." As of 2/20/00 deja.com shows 171 posts to newsgroups regarding GoHip, not one of these posts were positive. If the administrators of this site think they are making friends I would say they are severely disillusioned. They are well aware that not everyone reads License Agreements, in fact they depend on it. IMHO this program does nothing to enhance your browser's video as the name would imply. It is nothing but a self-serving ploy to increase the traffic to the GoHip website. I urge anyone reading this to avoid their website and downloading their software. I have removed their software from my machine and changed the signature line added to my correspo ndence as you see below. ----------------------------------------------------- DO NOT!!!!!!! Indeed. Several antivirus sites have pages up about this, presumably because of many tech-support calls... > ... I urge anyone reading this to It does not install any software to your machine at all, *apart from* a copy of the installer which is set to run at each startup so as to ensure that you have not disabled the "advertising". > avoid their website and downloading their software.
