Problem solved !

Double cause:

1. The clock frequency should be 66MHz but was set to 75MHz. This prevented
the
Maxtor to use UDMA (this cable was not to long). After resetting the clock
to 66MHz and disabling the secondary controller, it worked fine with both
the BIOS and the DMA-checkbox in WIN98 enabled.

2. The EIDE-cable to the secondary controller was really to long. Rearrange
some
things in the computer let me use a shorter one: no problems anymore.

Nevertheless I will buy the special UDMA-cables, I believe it will be more
reliable.

New results of HDTach for the MAXTOR:
Read burst: 16.6 mbps
Random access time 23.7 ms
CPU usage: 17.1 %

Thanks !
