Hullo wizards! Maybe one of you can help me end my misery, which is taking weeks already.... I installed win 98, formated my C drive and started from scratch. No problem so far, w98 runs okay. BUT..... after installing my (Creative Labs) SB16 pnp soundcard and restarting the machine, that soundcard disappeared! Thinking maybe the card is no good I tested it and also used another brand soundcard, also SB 16pnp compatible from Opti this time. Both cards are 100% okay. They install normal, it seems, they even show up in the device manager, but only if I choose "show by connection" and as soon as I restart everything is gone again! The weird thing is, that when I look in the device manager "by connection" I do see the card, but looking at it "by type" the bloody thing is gone! Maybe connected, maybe not, but another weird thing happened about the same time. My clock at first 'only' slowed down some after I shut off the machine. Like maybe 10 minutes a night, but now it stops all together at shut down. Can this be caused by an empty mainboard battery maybe? The board (+battery) is now about 3 years old...... I ran a simple freeware test, which said "okay" for the battery, but I don't trust it very much. It might simply mean that there IS a battery, not that it is okay? I would be eternally grateful, even longer maybe, for some good advise from one of you techno-wizards in this newsgroup and will await any reaction with great eagerness. Greetings from a frustrated keyboard-jockey in The Hague, Holland Ferry
