I am having a lot of trouble of upgrading an old win3.11 system to win2000. Any help is apprectiated. (I will devide my question/questions up). Remoove .nospamm too reeply. Thankyou. Craig. SYSTEM. Celeron 400 + 64MB ram Roland Camm1 series plotter. Rainbow tech. Dongle. Win2000pro Sign Wizard (R) Plotting software (cost ?? $2000 I think.) The old system was a 486 wimn 3.11. So i pulled out the HD and chucked it into my WIN2000 Box. Question 1. "How can i get 16bit software running stable under WIN2000?" The plotter runs off parallel LPT1 port. The Sign Wizard uses INTERNAL drivers. I think this is maybe becasue of the DONGLE which must also be connected to LPT1 for the program to even load. The plotter will do only one "session" (print execute) then the computer crashes and even ctr+alt+del and restart/close will not work. Gives error "Cannot terminate program. Your 16bit subsytem may become unstable" This is correct as it will not pork the LPT1 at all. Can I run a 16bit shell? That will work with the virtual drivers for the program? The old win3.11 had NO Roland plotter drivers installed. So I have NOT installed any for WIN2000. My next step is to set up a NEW PRINTER and install WINNT/2000 drivers for it. I think maybe WIN2000 will not use LPT1 properly with the 16bit drivers the program uses. Is there a work around for the DONGLE? How do these things work? Is the software written specifically for the selected DONGLE? Ta. Big ask I know. All help recieved gratefully. mailto:spannerzwatson.nospamm@hotmail.com ~Craig~

99% of dongles are not tied to the specific copy of software. They are just
like a serial number for Windows, any dongle for your program should unlock
any install of it. Obviously with a dongle you can only run one at a time,
which is the whole idea.
They were popular for a while, but are rarely used lately. There were
usually workarounds ("cracks") for popular programs like Autocad that used
them. There isn't any generic workaround but it's not terrifically hard to
find the authorization code in a binary if you have the time to look for it
and a disassembler. Definitely that would be against the license rules and
maybe against the law.

The simplest and most wide-spread "crack" was to use a "domestic
market" (USA) version. One rule for US(A), another for the rest of the
world.
