I don't know if this is your problem or not but: computers can have
trouble telling the size of large hard drives, I think it's greater than
1.2 GB, but I'm not sure. My computer's BIOS quite happily tells me
that my 2.5 GB hard drive is a 450 MB but it works fine, although it
does know that my 1.2 GB drive is a 1.2 GB drive... I don't know if
that helps or not, readin throuh what I just wrote probably not!

What I would suggest, is telling the BIOS manually how many heads and
cylanders and things manually, partition (if you want - definately if
you are using FAT16 - the default DOS / WINDOWS type), format and see if
it works. NOTE: if you don't know these things, contact Maxtor and find
out from them.
