I wonder if anyone can offer any advice. I purchased a Sony CD Writer, attached it to my pc and found it was faulty. Basically the data coming from it was corrupted. I got a replacement unit - same model - also faulty, it 'hung' my system and Win98 wouldn't load. I returned it and got a Ricoh this time. I fitted it to my computer. It was recognised at boot up. Device Manager knew the unit was there. I inserted a CD in my other CD Rom drive, it powered up and read the disc. I inserted the CD in the Ricoh, it wouldn't power up (spin) and wouldn't read the disk. This time I got my money back, although I actually wanted a working CD Writer. The computer shop would not give me a replacement as "your machine is destroying CD Writers and I can't risk another one". My feelings are that I was unlucky with the first 2. The third might not have been as straightforward as it appears, there's a possibility that it was not a new model. My question is, is it possible that my PC could be destroying CD writers? If so, Should it also be destroying CD ROM drives too? Simon
