The advice you have had on the power cable covers the ground. There may be another way to deal with the ribbon cable. I assume the CD-ROM is IDE and that you have two IDE headers, with a cable from each, at least one of the cables having two connectors for drives, and both cables are 50cm long. In other words, the problem is that the cable won't stretch from one HDD to the other. Run one cable thus: IDE Header - CD-ROM - New HDD (although the order of the drives doesn't matter) and the other cable thus: other IDE header - old HDD. Set the jumpers on both HDDs to master and the jumper on the CD-ROM to slave. The boot HDD will be the one cabled to IDE header 1, and you can swap them by swapping the cables. There is an urban myth that this will slow down your HDD - don't be put off by it: conflicts between IDE devices can slow them down, but it depends on brands, models and what is slaved to what, and CD-ROMs are no worse than other hard drives.
