>>>Please Help ... Mouse locks-up!<<<

Apologies if this is the wrong news group for my query.
Can anybody please help me with the following problem?

My mouse works perfect in all applications ( dos and windows ) untill
I enter Microsoft Diagnostics Ver 2.01. It still works o.k. untill I
enter either Com Ports stats or IRQ Status stats, whereupon the mouse
just locks-up. Everything works o.k. by keyboard commands, but I have
to reboot the computer in order to get the mouse working again.

Any suggestions?

I am using Windows 3.1 with Dos 5, upgraded to Dos 6.2,
Pentium Triton TX motherboard with AMD-K5-PR133 processor,
and Award Modular Bios V4.51PG.

The mouse is installed on Com1 with the following settings:
03FE
IRQ 4

Many thanks in advance.

Mick.

It is. As was the question about RAM. See the .sig

Yoy really want one of the demon.tech.* groups - this one is
for IP-related topics using plain DOS software.

demon.ip.support.pc is for DOS users, not Windows, Win95, OS/2, Turnpike..

Sounds like your mouse driver, or mouse hardware is not completely
compatible with MSD. I'm assuming your mouse is not a ms mouse, but a
compatible of some kind.

Borrow a mouse that does work with another computer with MSD and see
if it does OK with your hardware. If it works fine, (at that same
address and IRQ) then contact your mouse maker for an updated driver,
and/or try changing your com port/address/IRQ around a bit. See if it
makes a difference. You are sure you have nothing sharing that
interrupt or address, right? If you do, that will also cause your
problem, real quick. You'll need to get on your Sherlock Holmes cap
for that.

You might check first by just doing a clean boot (minimal drivers
only) and seeing if that makes a difference for MSD's lock-ups with
your mouse. Isolate every variable,. step by step.

Using MSD from a DOS shell while running windows is another possible
problem. I trust you are not doing that, right?

Best wishes with your rodent problem.

Dave

Better still, try posting to *appropriate* newsgroups, rather than
spamming.

Your mouse should be set to IRQ4 / 03f8
then check for IRQ4 conflicts

First, this is not intended to be unpleasant. :-). See there the
obligatory smiley.

I personally don't care (much) about this but there are a few who tend to
get a little tetchy about quoted sigs. Just thought I'd warn you.

Best bet? Use the old DOS mouse driver that came with the PS/2 systems.

Beware! This may not be your problem, but if you upgraded
direct from DOS 5 to 6.20 without first upgrading to DOS 6.0,
using the DOS 6.20 (or presumably 6.22) 'upgrade' disk, then you
will have a hybrid system with quite a lot of DOS 5 components,
not all of which will actually run. You can identify this
situation by looking to see if there are a lot of files with
timestamp "5.00" in your DOS directory. The results of running
such a system are not really predictable, but things can go wrong.
If you have this situation, probably best to reinstall DOS 6.22
 (or 6.20) from scratch.
