connecting a pc floppy to a laptop

Hi

I wonder if anyone can tell me how I would connect a normal IBM compatible
floppy to an Omnibook via the parallel port. The power and data tranfer
would be thru the same connection.

My external floppy was stolen and a new one costs AS$360 (guess because the
model is getting old).

  1) There is no power available from the parallel port
  2) Floppy drives are not compatible with serial or parallel ports
One might use a serial or parallel link with another computer that has
a floppy drive.

Um, are you saying you want to wire up/make a cable and case to do so,
or do you mean you want to buy something ?

If the former, then download this, and read. Chapter 11 has some
circuits examples:
 http://www.winbond.com.tw/sheet/877atf.pdf

If the later, there are third parties that may have one compatible with
the Omnibook. The only issue is wether you can determine wether the HP
Omnibook is a true parallel port floppy, an EXTFDD, and EXT2FDD, or an
EXTADP.

I suppose you could just get a parallel port one, but I haven't had
experience with those contraptions, and I think such a device would need
native BIOS support to allow you boot from it. Microsolutions make a
parallel port floppy:

Given the expense of such items, perhaps you should consider using an
LS120 type of device. That way you can use the ability to "backup" 120MB
of data, as a means to justify it. An LS120 device allows you to use
1.44MB and "Laser Servo" 120MB diskettes. Two in one.

Check www.deja.com to track down these and other brands of floppies...

trust me, the parallel port LS120 drive is the cheapest & easiest way to go
if you need portability.

if portability is not a major requirement then you can set up direct cable
connection to a win9x desktop parallel port with a bit of tweaking for the
cost of a cable & then transfer whatever you want.

the HP floppies you are talking about are not only ridiculously expensive
but also extremely unreliable.
