It's not "free." Each time you give your credit card to a new retailer, you increase the risk that the next news item that says "Retailer hacked: 20,000 credit card numbers exposed" will mean YOU have to spend time and hassle getting your card changed and disputing fraudulent charges. Or that a crooked waiter will skim your card number. It also means your card issuer knows that much more about your purchasing habits. It also increases your credit utilization which can affect your FICO (and not in a positive way.) Everyone will have to weigh the costs and benefits for their individual circumstances but somebody who's already rich will probably value his time and extra peace of mind more than a few hundred extra dollars that won't change his life anyway. That doesn't make them fools.
