They have not yet been approved for sale, and so their prices haven't been set. But the product exists, and it is creepy beyond belief. It is called "Genpet". It comes packaged in plastic, in a nutrient-induced "hibernation". It is alive. It slowly wakes up after the package is opened; it is supposed to emulate the movement of a human infant, and according to the website, it immediately bonds with the first person it sees. Although horrifying, I nevertheless found myself reading through the entire website, where you can see the product and its required display case. <http://www.genpets.com/> This is just too weird. You can buy your Genpet bioengineered to behave in any of several different color-coded ways: Red means "athletic and energetic". I think of it as the A-D-D Genpet. Violet means "imaginative and spiritual". Perhaps this is the hippy Genpet. With minimal care, your new Genpet can live either 1 or 3 years depending on the model you buy. Some of the accessories available for your new "pet" are "nutrient packs" and "tooth remover". Coming soon to a mall near you. Now go watch the "Trouble With Tribbles" episode of the original Star Trek series and pray that Genpet turns out that benign.
