Breathtaking display of Real Class

Unsolicited gifts to the Amish community that suffered the tragic loss
of its children have approached $700,000 in value.

So, what do the Amish do?

They set up a fund for the gunman's family as well as for their own
injured and dead and bereft.

People just don't come any classier or more worthy of respect.

So the next time someone sees his family needs help, he can just go and shoot
at the Amish and get his family taken care of.

Re-enforcing bad behavior.

Um, dude? The guy is dead. Reinforce away.

Oh, wait. You mean reinforcing all those other psycho killers lurking in
the shadows, watching and waiting for their opportunity to kill a bunch
of little girls in a schoolhouse and then commit suicide.

I see your point.

Yeah, you may be right: victims helping an innocent widow and her baby
is just bad on general free-market-economic carrot/stick "principles".
By combining her loss with their own, those Amish are just asking for it.

When you've gone through 4 years of pre-med, 4 years of medical school,
a year as an intern (at over 100 hours of duty a week), a couple of years
residency, and hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans
to finance more than a decade of education -- and when your professional
liability/malpractice premiums alone are over $10K a month -- when you've
done all that ...

...

Come back and tell us again how "greedy" doctors are.

now now...you're just egging the idiot on. ;-)

My hats off to the Amish families. They're the epitome of what being
a true Christian is all about.

In my area, if you couldn't bring in 7 figures, as a doctor, the seconcd
year, you were considered a failure.
They pay out a lot, in money, but not in as much in percentage, of
income, as we are led to believe.

true, but my doctor cousin paid it back in two years and the third year
she bought a 6400 square foot house, that was 10 years ago, now she
doesn't know what to do with the money, she bought and sold several
fast food franchises, part of a mall, a lake house, and moves every 15
months to a different neighborhood, she just married another surgeon,
that should be interesting....

It's part of what the Amish are. They place a high value on
forgiveness. I've not spoken with anyone involved in the matter, of
course, but I'm sure each and every family member has forgiven Charles
Roberts. And even if any of them hasn't yet, I'm confident not a one
of them feels any animosity towards his family.

Remember ... there was an extra 12 years or so *before* your
above-mentioned two or three years. Don't minimize it. It took
fifteen years of impossibly difficult (for the mere mortal) effort
to get to where your cousin was. Not two or three years.
Fifteen.

Y'all folks don't even know ... 12 to 15 years ...*before* you
even get an "entry level position" and start to see a return on your
investment? Most of you folks are on your second or third career
by then.

Again, my original statement stands: Try it first. When you're
successful at it, and you're a Doc with your own practice ...
in another 12 or 15 years ... come back and tell us again
how "greedy" doctors are.

Y'all call it "greedy" when the money goes to a Doc. Someone
who's dedicated their lives to looking up your asses for polyps
to SaveYourLife(tm).

And, yet, folks like you continue to buy lotto tickets, on the off
chance that a metric assload of money will fall into your laps.

Who's greedy? The one willing to work for it. The one to dedicate
year after year after year -- just for the chance to get started -- the
one to put up with several hundred thousand dollars in up-front
expense, and daily exposure to multi-million dollar lawsuits? The
one who opens a *business* that gainfully employs staff, and
buys products/services from other businesses?

OR

You dumb fucks who pump money into the various lotto scams.

Who's greedier?

the money for the roberts family is to help them since they no longer have

Its what happens when someone decides they are an expert and have never
seen the subject matter in person. I live only a few hours from
Lancaster County, have relatives there and every time I visit there are
plenty of horse drawn carriages to be seen.

It still never ceases to amaze me just how clueless you are and how willing

Same thing in the Old Order Mennonite area of SW Ontario. We have buggy
barns at Home Depot, grocery stores, and Staples. We have incongruities
such as computers (they can have them in the barn to control milking
parlours, for example) being loaded on buggies, and women in bonnets
talking on cell phones.

The Amish did that? I'm shocked. Shocked!

You know, I hear your bitterness. I'm not sure I understand it or its
source. But I think you are directing it the wrong way.

You remember when that little boy was murdered in Italy while on holiday
with his American parents a few years ago? They donated his organs so
that Italian children could live. It was yet another startling display
of generosity of spirit in the center of chaos and tragedy. It flies in
the face of unthinking evil and immeasurable pain, driving it away. I
don't know about you, but I see nothing to fault, and everything to
praise.

I personally wish my spirit was more like the Amish. I don't know that I
am strong enough to do what they do. But as blind and stupid and weak as
I can be, even I can see that their path of forgiveness and generosity
is the most direct road to peace.

It is an inspiration. What's sad is that it is so rare.

Or when they are so busy thinking of ignorant comments to interesting
replies that they never bother to read the replies and learn from them.
It's a downward spiral of stupidity.

Someone I know saw an Amish buggy in Tennessee this summer and said she
didn't realize there were Amish there. I said I thought maybe they were
from PA and the Dad decided to take the family to Disney World.

i don't think they'd travel that far in the buggy. they vacation in
sarasota, fl.
they use giant tricycles to get around instead of buggies.

I think they have common roots. Mennonites in Canada have two main
groups. One is from Switzerland, and has been in Canada for over 100
years. They live mostly in southern Ontario. Ironically, considering
how long they've been in North America, they are the ones who are most
like the Amish, and many either drive horse and buggy or black cars
with no chrome. The ones who came over in the early 1900s are from
Russia, and although they tend to be more conservative than the average
person, they look and act like modern people. There are large Mennonite
communities integrated into Western Canada.

I would probably understand better if it increased your determination
to keep it from happening to anyone ever again. But yes, I fail to see
how dehumanizing any specific group (including Jews) resolves the past
or improves the future. Especially hard for me to grasp is when the
dehumanizing impulse is brought about by the exemplification of the
very best in human nature; that compassion and mercy which sets
humanity apart from animals.

It seems more logical that seeing that in others would give purpose and
foundation to your revulsion at what has happened to the Jews (and
others as well, and continues to this day).

Instead, it seems to aggravate you to descend to the very mindset you
obviously deplore. I really don't mean to offend you or anyone else by
saying that. It is just how it appears to me in this medium.

i don't know anything about the friends, but i did say group (as in
denomination, if that's what the amish consider themselves), not
congregations. ex: lutheran church, episcopal church, baptist church,
catholic church, etc.

Duh, Society of Friends *is* a church--better known as the Quakers.

Actually, it could be more accurately described as a GROUP of
churches, or a denomination. (There's more than one group of
individuals calling themselves "Friends" who gather together for
worship.)
