simply amazing how this little tidbit never seemed to make it on the
national news. my guess it's the fascist society we live in.

My sister-in-law is dying of cancer. Doctor has given her a couple of
weeks. She's at home in pain that I can't imagine. Over the past year,
she has spent tens of thousands of dollars on prescriptions.

Now, she can't eat. Can't sleep.

On the advice of an anonymous doctor, her sister urged her to try
smoking some pot.

She refused, because it is illegal.

Title Prevention of Alzheimer's disease pathology by cannabinoids:
neuroprotection mediated by blockade of microglial activation.

Source Journal of Neuroscience. 25(8):1904-13, 2005 Feb 23.

Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by enhanced
beta-amyloid peptide (betaA) deposition along with glial activation in
senile plaques, selective neuronal loss, and cognitive deficits.
Cannabinoids are neuroprotective agents against excitotoxicity in vitro
and acute brain damage in vivo. This background prompted us to study
the localization, expression, and function of cannabinoid receptors in
AD and the possible protective role of cannabinoids after betaA
treatment, both in vivo and in vitro. Here, we show that senile plaques
in AD patients express cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, together with
markers of microglial activation, and that CB1-positive neurons,
present in high numbers in control cases, are greatly reduced in areas
of microglial activation. In pharmacological experiments, we found that
G-protein coupling and CB1 receptor protein expression are markedly
decreased in AD brains. Additionally, in AD brains, protein nitration
is increased, and, more specifically, CB1 and CB2 proteins show
enhanced nitration. Intracerebroventricular administration of the
synthetic cannabinoid WIN55,212-2 to rats prevent betaA-induced
microglial activation, cognitive impairment, and loss of neuronal
markers. Cannabinoids (HU-210, WIN55,212-2, and JWH-133) block
betaA-induced activation of cultured microglial cells, as judged by
mitochondrial activity, cell morphology, and tumor necrosis
factor-alpha release; these effects are independent of the antioxidant
action of cannabinoid compounds and are also exerted by a CB2-selective
agonist. Moreover, cannabinoids abrogate microglia-mediated
neurotoxicity after betaA addition to rat cortical cocultures. Our
results indicate that cannabinoid receptors are important in the
pathology of AD and that cannabinoids succeed in preventing the
neurodegenerative process occurring in the disease.

I don't know about all that, but it is strange that no news media has
run with this yet. not even the left wing "weekly" papers.....

news.google.com search on "thc alzheimers" just shows two hits, one
from NORML (figures!) and the other from some screen-scraping Italian
site....

hmmmm.....

Imo, if she has any chance at all, it would have to start with pot. It
will (or may) alleviate the pain, then enable her to sleep. It should
stimulate her appetite & enable her to hold food down. Thousands of
patients have already made these discoveries

If she's able to eat, she may last longer. If it were my relative,
think I'd try the
Budwig Diet. Unfortunately, it usually requires about 3 months, but
it's probably better than doing nothing.

At this late stage, think I'd look into direct injections of ozone into
the tumor (s?). Don't know if it's allowed in the US, it's quite common
in Germany, but don't know if it's useful this late in the game.

Among the thousands of California actors, musicians and writers who
legally use medical marijuana was famed author Peter McWilliams, who
suffered from AIDS and cancer. He said, "If it weren't for the illegal
pot dealers (before Proposition 215), there would have been no
marijuana and I wouldn't be alive today. Marijuana eases nausea and
makes it possible for me to keep down food and the pills I must take to
combat my diseases.

A tumor is a mass of swollen tissue. Researchers at the Medical College
of Virginia discovered that cannabis is an incredibly successful herb
for reducing many types of tumors, both benign and malignant
(cancerous). The DEA and other federal agencies had ordered these
tumor studies done after hearing erroneous reports of possible
immunicological problems associated with cannabis smoke. But, in
1975, instead of health problems, an apparent medical breakthrough
occurred and successful tumor reductions were recorded! Following
this remarkably positive discovery by the Medical College of Virginia,
orders were immediately handed down by the DEA and the National
Institute of Health to defund all furter cannabis/tumor research and
reporting! Millions of Americans who might be alive today are dead
because of these and other DEA orders regarding marijuana. Since 1996,
the Medical College of Virginia has again applied to receive grants for
cannabis research and has been turned down by the DEA.

U.S. Government Repressed Marijuana-Tumor Research
Pot Shrinks Tumors; Government Knew in '74

22 A Spanish medical team's study released in Madrid in February 2000
has shown that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active chemical in
marijuana, destroys tumors in lab rats. These findings, however, are
not news to the U.S. government. A study in Virginia in 1974 yielded
similar results but was suppressed by the DEA, and in 1983 the
Reagan/Bush administration tried to persuade U.S. universities and
researchers to destroy all cannabis research work done between 1966 and
1976, including compendiums in libraries.

The research was conducted by a medical team led by Dr. Manuel Guzman
of Complutence University in Madrid. In the study, brains of 45 lab
rats were injected with a cancer cell, which produced tumors. On the
twelfth day of the experiment, 15 of the rats were injected with THC
and 15 with Win-55, 212-2, a synthetic compound similar to THC. The
untreated rats died 12-18 days after the development of the tumors. THC
treated rats lived significantly longer than the control group.
Although three were unaffected by the THC, nine lived 19-35 days, while
tumors were completely eradicated in three others. The rats treated
with Win-55,212-2 showed similar results.

In an e-mail interview for this story, the Madrid researcher said he
had heard of the Virginia study, but had never been able to locate
literature on it. "I am aware of the existence of that research. In
fact I have attempted many times to obtain the journal article on the
original investigation by theses people, but it has proven impossible,"
Guzman said. His response wasn't surprising, considering that in 1983
the Reagan/Bush administration tried to persuade American universities
and researchers to destroy all 1966/76 cannabis research work,
including compendiums in libraries, reports Jack Herer. "We know that
large amounts of information have since disappeared," he says.

Guzman provided the title of the work -- "Antineoplastic Activity of
Cannabinoids," an article in a 1975 Journal of the National Cancer
Institute -- and author Raymond Cushing obtained a copy at the UC
Medical School Library in Davis, California, and faxed it to Madrid.
The 1975 article does not mention breast cancer tumors, which were
featured in the only newspaper story ever to appear about the 1974
study in the local section of the Washington Post on August 18, 1974.
The headline read, "Cancer Curb Is Studied," and was followed in part
by, "The active chemical agent in marijuana curbs the growth of three
kinds of cancer in mice and may also suppress the immunity reaction
that causes rejection of organ transplants, a Medical College of
Virginia team has discovered. The researchers found that THC slowed the
growth of lung cancers, breast cancers, and a virus-induced leukemia in
laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent."

Drug Enforcement Agency officials shut down the Virginia study and all
further cannabis research, according to Jack Herer, who reports on
these events in his book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes. In 1976,
President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and
granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies.
These companies set out -- unsuccessfully -- to develop synthetic forms
of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without the "high."

Very simple. The Pharma-Cartel will never allow it. Imo, if you live
to 100, you'll never see a positive study on pot in the mainstream
"news" in the US.
