A P.E. really makes a difference in the IS and Software Engineering fields.
With so many "fly-by-night" programmers and IS consultants (of which, many are
business degreed or none), if a company sees a P.E. come in with his license
and liability insurance, he's likely to get hired over someone else.
Many companies are finding out these "Novell Certified Administrator/Engineer
(CNA/CNE) and "Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE)" consultants are a
joke. They don't really know much except the specifics of those products and
most companies don't have just that one OS. This is especially true of my
company which has over a dozen platforms/OSes and a few real-time environments
-- most of them which are required to control embedded systems and/or design
and test our end product.
Therefore, even though these systems are required to make our product, the IS
department (rotated regularly) simply disregards supporting them since they
have labelled them "non-standard." Hence why a software engineer like me is
transformed into the IS department everyday.
My $0.02 ...
