A BS alone in an engineering field does not qualify you to be >an engineer. The pure statistics of how few working engineers in the US have PE certification shows the lie in that claim. I think it's down around 4-5%. What does PE do? Besides a nice sheet of paper, in most states it lets you sign off on certain final approvals on civil engineering and construction project designs. It probably is a bonus for your paycheck. It indicates that at some point you passed the EIT and then jumped through some on the job hoops. But it in no way is required for you to do the calculations and design work needed to be "an engineer". Either you know what you are doing or you don't, and no piece of paper either is required for that ability or enables it magically. Unless you're in a position where you are doing civil engineering and need to sign work off, it's not in any way a job requirement. -george william herbert gherbert@crl.com
