The PE title after ones name does little outside of consulting and firm-work other than the already mentioned pretty piece of paper and possible pay bonus. The "real" engineer that someone coined earlier is the person dedicated enough to their profession to seek the education AND experience to comlete "engineering" tasks. The design engineer (and my next question will be are they not real engineers?) is far more essential in their verse of theory and application of practical experience than the PE who stands over the draftsman and initials his drawings. Especially in non-public-sector fields such as aerospace (where the last small aircraft was designed circa 197?), it is much more important to be able to get the job done and to have the engineering credentials than it is to be a PE, afterall what would the point be. Unless your personal specialization requires you to PE to further your career possibilities, why bother? That time/money/effort would be better spent furthering education to keep up with technology and trends, or taking the vacation that most engineers hold sacred :) Just my $0.02.
