Besides, the states are not anything like intrinsic self

Bingo, you got it. My point in the original post was to point out that no
one state can exist very well by themself cause they do not have sufficient
and varied resources to make a decent go of it. If many states band
together and "pool" their resources, then everyones life benefits. I am
seeing certain states (special interest groups) break off and willingly take
some/most of the goods and services provided by other states but are
unwilling to contribute to the "big picture". Some states only contribution
would be to store hazardous material??? Since they have very little to
contribute to the whole of the country.. Some states contribution would be
power generation or fuel supply (coal, gas, nuclear) or mineral extraction
and some pollution would have to be beared by neighboring states. The
neighboring states natural resources would be useless without the power
contribution from one of its neighboring states. As well the power genertion
state would be hurt if they couldn''t get goods and supplies generated by
their neighboring states. Electric power does not digest well or dress one
well either.

People need to temper their attitude about pollution and focus on the
benefits the industrial world provides them. Don't give up on pollution
control but keep it reasonable affordable to the mass of the people. If we
all work together, contribute to the better of society, it wil be a better
place to live. If we fragment ourselfs to special interest groups, and
band this and that, then we all suffer.

Expand your thinking. Why would a
