Actually, Murray makes quite a salient point. When you are looking at risk, you really should evaluate ALL risks. When you "wrestled" those heavy cans to your roof, you were doing something that you felt was beneficial. Perhaps it will bring personal satisfaction to you, perhaps it will bring more disposeable income to your pocket. You DID however take an additional risk to yourself and your family. Had you been aware of those risks, you might or might not have followed through with the job. You chose to take that risk upon your self, and that is fine with me. BUT. Let us contemplate legislating the use of PV panels on all homes. This action would increase risks to the workforce, and PV installers would fall, some would be hurt, some would be killed. That is a price. Just like coal miners. Ever read a story about "Fire in Mine, 31 coal miners killed". It happens. What do you think when you read this story? Most people think "Well of course, they work in a dangerous occupation". If a PV installer falls off of a roof, what will you think? Most people think "Well of course, he worked in a dangerous occupation". Now, consider the headlines, oh let's look at one from the recent (Febuary) Steam Generator Tube Leak at the Indian point nuclear station. That incident was a "non event". No one was hurt, the off-site radioactivity release was so small to be less than trivial, about two puffs on a cigarette worth of lifetime risk. The plant worked precisely as it was designed. So what did people think when they see the headline? Too many people think that "Nuclear is going to kill us all". THAT is the problem. With nuclear, there are risks. With coal there are risks. With PV there are risks. These risks need to be evaluated scientifically, not emotionally. > > Wayne- "for my next death-defying feat, I'll swing a paint brush from a > ladder" <G> Suggestion, go out and purchase or rent scaffolding. My brother-in-law just fell from his ladder painting his house. He ended up breaking his toe, luckily he did not break his leg or back. dewey
