A police chase that started on I-74 near Race Road ends when a deputy opened fire on the suspect, who later crashed.

Officers tell Local 12 a Regional Narcotics Unit (RENU) officer had a car under surveillance, which they believed to be carrying a shipment of heroin. The RENU officer had the driver pull over for a traffic stop at I-74 and Rybolt just before noon. Officers say the driver, Steven Davenport, initially complied-but they took off.

Officers say someone threw heroin from the vehicle during the chase-it has since been recovered. Davenport's car eventually exited I-74 onto North Bend Road. That's when the a shot was fired by a deputy. No one was hit.

Davenport crashed a short time later, on Harrison Avenue in Cheviot. It appears no one was hurt in the crash.

Witnesses tell Local 12 that Davenport and an unnamed woman were taken into custody. Davenport is now charged with trafficking, possession, having a weapon under disability, fleeing and eluding and tampering with evidence. No word yet on whether the woman will face charges.
