The article above is from yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle.  It
describes a serious crisis facing the city's lesbian community,
the lack of lesbian bars and other lesbian-oriented businesses in
the city.

Normally, this would be considered evidence of system homophobic
discrimination, but since San Francisco is the gay capital of the
planet it is hard to make that claim, plus the fact that SF has
approx. 1500 gay male bars and porn shops.  In this case it turns
out that the dearth of lesbian bars is due to something called
market forces, that there simply is insufficient public demand to
support more than two dyke bars, despite claims of up to 45% of
the general population being gay or lesbian.  Of the two, the
Shag Carpet Lounge plans to close by the end of the year.

To resolve this crisis, lesbian advocacy groups are agitating for
the city to award a $5.3 billion grant to subsidize up to 125 new
lesbian bars and dildo stores to service the lesbian community,
as well as a new public library devoted to lesbian poetry and
literature.
