ALGOL is a descriptive language for mathematical algorithms, that is: how to solve an equation / formula / rule ... It is somewhat more intended for use by mathematicians, while Fortran was made for engineers. This is a raw distinction. Pascal now is usable and used for application level programming primarily, whereas C was made for system level programming. C was developed as an improvement to macro assemblers to write the kernel of Unix. But now it is heavily used for application level programs too, especially C++. The major difference is the way how the source code "sounds". Pascal source code is very well self - explaining, in most cases you do not even need many comments, while C programs look like a line noise even if they are commented. (This is a rather bad comment, you see that I prefer Pascal over C). Pascal and its successors Modula 2, Oberon etc. are structured, procedural languages as opposed to Fortran and Basic which are kilometer languages full of GOTO and GOSUB, which is not used in Pascal and ALGOL. C is structured and procedural too, but poorly implemented. In the last 10 years Pascal has been improved with OOP, object oriented programming. This is a very powerful extension to Pascal for bigger projects, but not standardized with Pascal. With Windows many programmers switched to Delphi, which is a RAD = Rapid Application Development system. It uses Pascal syntax and structures, but is somewhat new in the way of working with. Hope you got information for your article now. If you are new to Pascal, then look at the "famous" Pascal links site, where you find any additional information. http://www.geocities.com/~franzglaser/tp.html Regards, Franz Glaser, Austria http://members.eunet.at/meg-glaser
