"For just over a hundred years the Crimean War," begins the author of this long overdue historical re-examination, "has been presented to the public as the classic model of military and medical blundering." He proceeds to demolish tlus consensus version of the War's history and notes that it succeeded in its major British aim of halting Russian expansion near the Black Sea. Mr. Warner, a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (England), proves in this illustrated study that the myth of British losses in the Crimean War has been an exaggerated concoction created by pointing out a few military defeats and noting the legendary horror stories about the breakdown of medical service to the wounded Allies who seemingly could only get help from Florence Nightingale. From a military point of view, the image of the campaign as badly managed by the Allies is a particularly unwarranted generalization. The reality was that the British won the campaign despite the fact that they had to begin with an army badly neglected for forty years prior to the beginning of the Crimean conflict in 1854. British soldiers lived up to their reputation as an inspired fighting fbrce, however, and were ultimately able to join the French in defeating a Russian army that failed to take decisive advantage of its early military superiority. The medical history of the War is also usually unfair to Allied efforts. Mr. Warner argues that the horrible plagues of the Crimean period actually occurred before doctors had adequate knowledge of how to curb the spread of bacteria and viruses. Mr. Warner also wrote The Medieval Castle: Life in a Fortress in Peace and War. - Contents Foreword 1 The Causes of the War 2 The Military Background 3 The Battle of the Alma 4 The March to Balaclava 5 The Baladava Battles 6 Inkerman 7 Everyday Life Before Sebastopol 8 The Russian Defences 9 Sebastopol - 1855 - the Main Battlc 10 The Fighting Men 11 The War Elsewhere 12 The Aftermath Bibliography Index -- See Also The Voice of the Dolphins By Leo Szilard http://auctions.yahoo.com/auction/2399746 Therapeutic Use Of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25 (lsd-25) http://auctions.yahoo.com/auction/2443095 Magic Mushrooms Around The World http://auctions.yahoo.com/auction/2443109 101 Dalmations Story Book http://auctions.yahoo.com/auction/2361972 Manual of Linear Integrated Circuits http://auctions.yahoo.com/auction/2387501 Practical DCE Programming http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=58970324 Edvard Munch Lithographs, Etchings, Woodcuts http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=59041415 Year-Round Holiday Cookbook Marlene Sorosky http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=58815526 TRUE CRIME: SERIAL KILLERS http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=58828389 SOUTHWEST ART March 1977 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=58834125
