Well, it was posted in response to my article, so I feel constrained
to reply; unfortunately, I have little to say.
In article <1992Dec13.004405.12206@ultb.isc.rit.edu>
rxv9839@ritvax.isc.rit.edu (Bob Vogel) writes:
Don't you all think (with due respect for the menatl anguish that
may cause some of the "flame" experts reading) that the lack of
correlation between trance phenomena and EEG's and any number of
the other comments that have been posted here {when we weren't
talking about NLP} point strongly in the direction that there is a
part of our psyche (soul, most basic uniquness, & 50 other terms
for that same essential "us-ness") that is both seperable from the
body and not observable, at least with our current crude
instruments? Many people's out of body experiences would seem to
point in this direction. Such a separate self would possibly
account also for some of the anamolies discussed herein.
Comments?? observations that tend to support or detract?? Anybody
in hypnosis had anything to say about this?
This is one (but only one) possible hypothesis. If I approach this
from the purely scientific point of view, I will choose a simpler
hypothesis first: that the nature of hypnosis and the nature of EEG
measurements are not necessarily connected.
My religious viewpoint disagrees; I believe in the concept of a soul,
and of God, not because of my experience of hypnosis, but because of
my own religious practices and experiences. At this point, I have no
real evidence or opinion with respect to the relationship between
hypnosis and such experiences (except to the extent that hypnosis, and
self-hypnosis, can de-potentiate conscious processes, which may assist
in meditation).
