Does anybody know whether hypnosis can help to relieve cramp? My girlfriend often suffers from cramp in the feet and legs. My impression is that cramp is essentailly a physical condition brought on by cold and poor blood circulation(?). She has sought advice from her doctor with out much success, but found that the homeopathic cramp cure of magnesium tablets can give her some relief if the attack is not too severe. Any advice appreciated. Andrew Dunn Institute of Astronomy | Tel: (0223) 337548 x 37531 Madingley Road | Fax: (0223) 337523 Cambridge, U.K. | CB3 0HA | E-mail: amd@mail.ast.cam.ac.uk

Hypnosis should never be used to relieve undiagnosed pain, which is what you are suggesting. You may want to repost your inquiry at sci.med. Several excellent physicians participate at sci.med, and one or more will probably give you a medical opinion.

I can eliminate just about any pain a subject might feel using post hypnotic suggestion. But it's really not a good idea, and I don't do it. Pain is a mechanism by which the body communicates that it has a problem. Tampering with this mechanism, particularly by a lay hypnotist, can be VERY dangerous. I'd consult an MD before trying this.

Hypnosis in response to a medical condition should always be done in conjunction with full consultation with a medical doctor. Cramps may be from a variety of causes, as may circulation problems. My own case was connected with undiagnosed diabetes; to hypnotically mask such symptoms without a proper diagnosis is a VERY serious mistake. That said (it sounds like you are consulting a doctor in any case), hypnosis can have beneficial effects on blood circulation in various parts of the body. If circulation is really the problem, hypnosis might help improve this. As for ``advice'', proposals concerning actual suggestions would be inappropriate in my opinion, as they tend to be highly individual. Find a good practitioner and have at it.
