I'm new to this news group. In fact I'm new to the internet.
If I can ever figure out how to use this thing, I'd like to
communicate with people interested in hypnosis.

I was trained at Northeastern University 1972-1977, and later
did the AAEH training in forensic hypnosis. My professional
objective at the time was to elicit better information from
crime witnesses and victims. I was VERY successful. The AAEH
training was given by Harry Aarons and Howard Frankel. Howard was an
assistant chief of the NYPD and consulted for the government of Israel.
I think that anyone who knows hypnosis knows Harry Aarons.

I haven't been involved with law enforcement since I left the
military, so don't be turned off by that-- I'm not a cop. Not
that there's anything wrong with policemen (usually).

My current interest is in motivational hypnosis. By that I mean
the use of hypnosis to stimulate and/or enhance learning or to
empower people in other ways. A friend of mine (who has about
maxed out on being an elementary school principal) and I are toying
with starting a business planning and managing the education of
No. Virginia's rich kids from elem level through admission to
the university of their choice. Hypnosis and self hypnosis
is a tool we'd like to develop and use.

If anyone (particularly university students 8 hour drive or less
from Washington, DC) is interested, please respond by e-mail or
net reply. Incidentally, I don't practice medicine or
psychiatry. I will undertake instruction in hypnosis and self
hypnosis to enhance short term retention, build better study
habits and other similar experimentation. This is a "not for
profit" venture. I get to experiment and develop technique--
you learn hypnosis and self hypnosis (and get to experiment and
develop technique).

I thought hypnosis is useless for motivation. For example, the
hypnotist who made me quit smoking many years ago emphasized
that the motivation had to come from me. I had to want to
quit smoking. Otherwise, it wouldn't work.

There's a book out called "How To Get Straight A's."

Do you know Thea Cox (Maxwell). She's the head of
Northern Virginia's "Head-Start Program," which already
does what I think you are contemplating.

On the question of whether hypnosis can be used to enhance motivation, I'm
inclined to recommend a very old classic by Charles G. Leland (the folk-
lorist and gyspy-lorist) originally published in 1899 under the somewhat
hokey title "Have You a Strong Will," and later issued as "The Mystic Will."
(It's still in print under the latter title.) He has a *very* ingenious
method for using one's own suggestibility [which he recommends enhancing
by self-hypnosis] in a step-by-step, round-about fashion which eventually
effects motivation and will-power. For a term project last semester, one
of the students in my course on "Magic in the Middle Ages" undertook to
test Leland's method on himself, and reported that he was able to make it
work. (He thought suggestibility was one of the means by which a Medieval
magician might have obtained empirically verifiable results from his magic.)
