A friend of mine has a way of leaving _long_ away messages even when he is
there... needless to say, I did not want to see his message whenever i messaged
him. Someone told me there was a way to suppress the away message, but i
couldn't find it (if you know of one, let me know)..
Therefore, I wrote the following script.
------------------------------------------------
/comment 301 is the message that is returned when you msg someone that is away
/comment (be quiet about it..)
on ^301 * {
assign pers A_$0
if "$($pers)=$1-" "" "echo *** $0 is away$1-"
assign $pers $1-
}
Dough...

You wanted to know what people thought of your script.
Well here goes. I'm not picking on you I just want to point out some
points that people should keep in mind.
>/comment 301 is the message that is returned when you msg someone that is away
>/comment (be quiet about it..)
^ ^\--- Comment is dead.. Use '#' or ':' from now on.
\--- Throw away these / They aren't needed.. They're ugly.. ugly ugly.
>on ^301 * {
> assign pers A_$0

^^^^^^^^ - What if the person's nickname is one^two or
blah\ or ^-_-^? Big problems doncha think?
Unfortunately this is a sticky problem. I wrote
A function that strips off all unsavory chars
so I can use them in variable names and such but
it's got it's drawbacks as it can leave you with
nothing at all.
Oh and put your nicknames in a structure A.$0 instead.. This way you can
use the 'FOREACH' operator on it. (Say you want to clean the list or
some such..)
> assign $pers $1-
>}
Ok.. last big comment here.. Don't use names like 'tmp' or 'pers' or
'blah' for variables. You'll find yourself using them in more than one
script or someone's elses scripts.. etc.. This can be a pain in the butt
to track down. There are currently two conventions. Use names all
related to your script. Yours is the away script lessay.. so you might
use assign aw.pers .... or assign aw_pers ..... I like the former
better because if I say..
/assign aw. it says
*** AW <Structure> and if I say..
/assign aw. it will give me all the variables in that structure.
Also, when you get to ircII2.2pre7 (or whatever it is by then) throw away
assign and use '@'. It's much more powerful. There are still uses for
assign though.. as you'll see.

Anyway.. how would I write this? (This is pre7 format of course)
on ^302 * {
@ aw.name = [away.] ## stripchan($0) ## [.] ## stripchan($1)
if ([$($aw.name)] != [$1-]) {echo *** $0 is away $1-}
assign $aw.name $1-
}
alias stripchan {
assign function_return $strip(#()+-*/\\={}[]<>!@$$%^~`,?:|'\". $0-)
}
Notice that I included $1 in the name... This is in case someone has
a nasty nickname and it's totally stripped off by 'stripchan' then hopefully
it can pick something worthwhile out of the first word of the away message.
Anyway.. keep in mind this is all academic anyway.. You're on the right track.

Also, set SHOW_AWAY_ONCE is also a bit broken, sometimes it doesn't always work.. I'll be looking in to it sometime soon.. 8) >You didn't tell me if you liked my solution though :/ didn't see why you couldn't do on ^301 nick to do it personally.. 8) ..
