I have two computers, one is now unning definite linux, and the other
windows 98. I would like to connect these computers together in a network,
and recently bought two cards and a crossover cable.

the cards are D-link 528 or something, and the cable is category 5 UTP
cable, with RJ45 connections.
the computers, i dont think matter too much, do they? i dont have a hub, i
just have the crossover cable.

what i need to know, is exactly what to do in both windows 98 and in linux,
to make them work. im using KDE, or Gnome, depends on my mood, but I can do
it in either if you want.

What about IP addresses. can I just use any IP address in the 192.0.0.0
range? does it matter if someone else in the world has this IP address? say
if i connect my computers together using IP addresses of 192.0.0.1 and
192.0.0.2, would there be any conflicts with any other computers areound the
world? do i have to register these IP addresses somewhere, even if I am just
to use them for home networking use, not to be used as a global server.
anyway, where do i register IP addresses, and how do I assign domain names
to them?

as you can see, im not network fluent at all, and im hardly linux fluent
either, but im willing to give anything a try, including re-installing, if
it comes to that (windows stays though, as linux wont work on that box, ive
tried, it wount detect the sis card ive got installed, a bastard if its your
graphics card!).

thanks a lot
