Yes, you just need 2 cards and a crossover. Any more boxes though and
you'll need a hub and normal cable.

It's got nothing to do with either Gnome or KDE. Networking
established at boot time before even your X session is started.
Start off by taking a trip to linuxdoc.org and reading up all the
relevant info there. You'll find most of it covered here:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/networking.html
It's not difficult but there's a bit to read. It's best that you have
a stab at it yourself and then come back with any problems.
You need to configure basic networking first and then think about
Samba to get windows talking to your linux box.

No they are set aside for private use and the aren't seen by the rest
of the world. The only IP number seen by everyone else will be the one
given to you by your ISP. If you connect to the worlf with your linux
box you'll use something called "IP Masquerading" which will make all
your computers look like they belong to the one IP number.

I don't see why you'd need to reinstall (or even reboot) anything on
the linux machine. Networking in linux is easy once you get the hang
of the basic concepts. Networking in windows isn't particularly
difficult either although you need to reboot between config changes so
it's quite slow going.

Try again. SiS cards should now have full support on X. I'm not sure
how up to date your distribution is but you may want to try a
newer one with the latest versions of X and/or check for patches for
your graphics chipset. AFAIK though it really shouldn't be a problem.
