And usually, with the command "rpm -ivh (program name)" would install the program in the correct directories, and "rpm -F (program name)" for updating an older rpm package. To search your system to see if a package is already install, use "rpm -qa | grep (program name)". Of course, to uninstall the package use "rpm -e (program name)". All of this could be done graphically using gnorpm or any other gui rpm applications. Ok, now if you're using a system that does not use rpm's then you must download the source and compile it yourself so the program will be compatible with your system. Usually, the source comes in *.tar.gz, so download it, then use "tar -xvzf (file name)" to uncompress it into a directory, then read the INSTALL file, if there is one. But most programs have a configure program, which is use to determine your system's parameters before compiling and installing. This is generally the steps, BUT IT DIFFERS FROM PROGRAM TO PROGRAM SO READ THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS. 1. untar the program source code - "tar -xvzf (filename)" 2. run the configure - "./configure" (ps. '--prefix= ' after configure is use to specify the install directory, but usually you do not need to set that. 3. run make to compile the program - "make" 4. then install the program - "make install" AGAIN, THOSE ARE JUST THE GENERAL STEPS, EACH PROGRAM REQUIRES DIFFERENT STEPS TO COMPILE. feel free to e-mail me, if you have any questions. - Van
